College Football Uniforms: Grading Michigan State's Nike Pro Combat Uniforms
When the Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines go head to head today, the Spartans will be running out onto the field with their new Nike Pro Combat uniforms.
The Spartans have joined the crowd and have allowed Nike to include them in these uniforms designs.
Here is a look at the various parts of the Michigan State uniforms and how they grade out.
Design
1 of 6Overall, the design of the uniform from head to toe is very sleek, and has the same feel that most of the other pro combats have.
These new uniforms by Nike have really separated people in two groups: you either love them or you hate them. The reason may be that Nike has started to tinker with programs who have had traditional looks like Michigan State and LSU, but with this look, they have not gone too far off the path.
Grade: B+
Cool Factor
2 of 6The upside about these uniforms is that most of them have a certain cool factor to them, which does resonate with recruits.
Oregon is a school that began this trend and it allowed them to get some of the top recruits at their position on campus, and then allowed the program to sell itself from that point.
These Spartan uniforms are extremely cool. From head to toe, Nike did a nice job of not creating an embarrassing look for the team.
Grade: A
Against the Nation
3 of 6You cannot help but compare the Pro Combat uniforms against the rest of the nation.
So far, Maryland has been the biggest miss (though those uniforms were done by Under Armour). But teams like LSU, Oregon and now Michigan State have all received pleasant surprises.
Overall, the Michigan State uniforms are on par with the rest of the nation's best and were bought up in a hurry online and in stores.
Grade: A-
Color Scheme
4 of 6This may be the only place that Nike missed the mark.
With Michigan State having the traditional green and white as their colors, Nike added in a bronze look throughout the uniform to match what Spartans would have worn into battle.
While the look is still good, I have to dock the Spartans a half of a letter grade because of the lack of white used in the uniform.
Grade: B+
Uniqueness
5 of 6To be fair to Michigan State, none of these uniforms have been really unique since the original line of teams came out.
Nike has gone with a pretty standard base, including the compression shirt, gloves and jersey. When they have veered off of that idea, they have given us some not-so-good looks that people have ripped apart.
Grade: B-
Overall
6 of 6Overall, Nike came through in a big way for the Michigan State Spartans. From the bronze helmet to the sharp-looking cleats, the Spartan Pro Combat uniforms are great.
Today, the Spartans will run out onto their home field and will be sporting these new uniforms. When they do come out into Spartan Stadium, they will have the confidence of knowing they will be looking great in their new uniforms.
