College Football Picks Week 7: 3 Teams Las Vegas Wants You To Bet on Saturday

Jeff GrantOct 14, 2011

Las Vegas sports books took it on the chin last weekend in college football and will definitely look for some of the country's marquee teams to falter against the spread on Saturday.

As pointed out in Sunday's picks article before the national media got a hold of it, ten of the top 11 teams from the AP Top 25 poll were in action last week, outscoring their opponents by a combined 464-127 margin.

Many would think that the casual bettor would realize that the oddsmaker has likely inflated the line against him this week, but that's just not the case.

Another reason why the betting odds have been lifted even higher is the fact that the first installment of the BCS standings is expected to be released on Sunday.

Even more incentive for the top tier programs to blow out the competition and make an impression in the casual bettors' eyes.

Here's a question for you:  Do you think Vegas doesn't watch television?

Anything can happen in any given week, but I'll go out on a limb and say Vegas strikes back in a big way when the dust settles this weekend.

Let's take a look at three teams that the oddsmakers want you to bet Saturday.

Stanford Cardinal

1 of 3

Few teams have killed Las Vegas like the Stanford Cardinal this year, coming into this week with a perfect 5-0 ATS record and the nation's longest winning streak.

It's simple for the public, as quarterback Andrew Luck is perceived to be the No. 1 pick in next year's NFL draft, which makes it easy to place the wager in their minds.

Over 85 percent of the wagers have come in on the Pac-12 Conference favorites, but the betting odds have remained on the key number of 21 for most of the week.

At some of the sharpest books in the industry, it's never moved above that number, which is incredibly telling.

I think the line is inflated by 4.5 points, which is incredible value in the sports betting market.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

2 of 3

Personally, I think the line was originally spot on, but the original move of betting the Oklahoma State Cowboys up to an 8.5-point favorite is very telling.

That's as far as sharp money wanted to push the envelope before getting more money down on the other side.

The line has now settled in on a key number of seven, which shows that the oddsmaker is willing to allow the public into the game.

Look at last week's results—an easy bet for the public to make.

Look at last year's meeting—an even easier wager to complete.

Find out that Texas Longhorns head coach Mack Brown has never lost after playing Oklahoma—watch out.

LSU Tigers

3 of 3

Let's take a look at the LSU Tigers being favored by 18 points against the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday.

First off, this game is receiving the most wagers in the betting market, which is very telling considering the amount of games on the odds board.

Some would argue that the No. 1 team in the country is the right side due to the line movement, but let me tell you, it's more associated with the public's overreaction to Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray being out.

Why would I say such a thing?

Look at the situation that casual bettors watched last week, as LSU buried Florida, who was playing without its starting signal-caller.

The difference is—Volunteers backup Matt Simms threw 195 passes last year, including 22 against Alabama.

Plenty of experience under center for Tennessee on Saturday.
