"I always consider this to be the game of the season in English football," Ferguson said. "We need each other."
Ah, the mystery and wonder of the symbiotic relationship: the clownfish and the sea anemone; coral and algae; Anakin Skywalker and those creepy organisms that give Jedi their Force powers.
Apparently, Fergie thinks it's the same for Liverpool and Manchester United.
This much is true: Liverpool and United are the yin and yang of English footballing glory. The clubs have combined for 37 league titles, 18 FA Cups and eight European Cups.
In true give-and-take form, their fortunes have varied this week. For Liverpool, Steven Gerrard has fully recovered from his groin injury (fun times!) and is expected to start.
For United, you might have heard that Wayne Rooney was recently banned for three games by UEFA after embracing his inner ogre against Montenegro.
That doesn't affect Manchester United. Rooney will still play. However, it could prove a distraction on Saturday.
Will it? There's only one way to find out.
We'll be here to live blog all the action, starting around 7:30 a.m. Eastern. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45, so grab a cup of coffee and join us for one of the most intense rivalries in English football.
