College Football Injury Updates for LaMichael James, Braxton Miller and More

Johnathan CaceOct 14, 2011

Last week there were some amazing games, but we also lost some of the country’s best players to injuries.

LaMichael James dislocated his elbow in gruesome fashion. Braxton Miller left before Ohio State could complete the upset against Nebraska. There were plenty of other injuries from both last week and the week before.

Here are all the updates on the injuries you need to know about.

LaMichael James

1 of 11

James was seen walking out of practice with a soft cast on. That is fantastic news considering just how bad his elbow injury looked.

Unfortunately that doesn’t mean he will be available for Oregon’s important game against Arizona State, at least according to quarterback Darron Thomas and SB Nation. But according to James, there is a “40-60 chance” that he plays.

Chances are this is more of a ploy to get Arizona State to prepare for him when he won’t actually play.

Braxton Miller

2 of 11

Miller was forced to the sidelines at the conclusion of the Buckeye’s game against Nebraska last week. It was one of the major reasons why Ohio State blew their lead.

For the big game this week against Illinois, NBC4i.com says Miller has been declared healthy enough to play.

This is the only way Ohio State has a chance of pulling the upset in this game, because Joe Bauserman has gotten worse over the course of the season.

Tyler Bray

3 of 11

Washington Post Sports reported that the Tennessee quarterback fractured his thumb on his throwing hand two weeks ago and he is still out.

Matt Simms is his replacement, but Bray replaced him in the middle of last season so you can kiss goodbye any hopes an upset this weekend against LSU.

This also likely means that Tennessee’s chances of winning the SEC East are done.

John Brantley

4 of 11

Florida’s John Brantley went down two weeks ago with a high ankle sprain and SB Nation says he won't play in the game against Auburn.

His replacements, Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett, have had to play against two of the best defenses in the country in Alabama and LSU. Hopefully they will be ready to face a lesser Auburn defense.

Derek Moye

5 of 11

Arguably the best player on Penn State’s offense, wide receiver Derek Moye, fell down the stairs and broke a bone in his foot according to ESPN.

His expected recovery time is two weeks so he will be out for the Lion’s game against Purdue this weekend.

The bigger question will be whether or not he can fully recover his agility and elusiveness once he returns.

Tajh Boyd

6 of 11

Boyd seriously scared Clemson fans last weekend. He stayed on the ground for several minutes after getting hit in the hip while not wearing a pad.

Thankfully, ESPN says he should be good to go against Maryland this Saturday. You can bet he’ll be wearing a hip pad from now on, though.

Melvin Ingram

7 of 11

Do-it-all defensive end Melvin Ingram had South Carolina fans nervous when he injured his foot against Auburn two weeks ago.

Now, according to NBC Sports, he is "ready to roll” for the Gamecocks important SEC battle against Mississippi State.

With the dismissal of Stephen Garcia, this is the best news fans have heard all week.

Virginia Tech

8 of 11

The Hokies were already thin on their defensive line after defensive tackle Antoine Hopkins tore his ACL against Clemson, but now they are even thinner for a game against 5-1 Wake Forest.

Defensive end James Gayle won’t play with a sprained ankle and ESPN reports whip linebacker Jeron Gouveia-Winslow is done for the season with a Linsfranc sprain in his left foot.

Josh Harris

9 of 11

Speaking of Wake Forest, their starting running back Josh Harris was listed as doubtful, according the Washington Post, for the game against Virginia Tech.

He ran for 241 yards against the Hokies last year, and the Deacons were hoping to take advantage of the aforementioned injuries to their defensive front seven.

USC

10 of 11

Last night the injury bug hit the USC Trojans hard against Cal.

Cornerback Anthony Brown, wide receiver Marqise Lee and running back Marc Tyler all had game-ending injuries.

According to The Orange County Register, Brown broke his left ankle, Lee sprained his right shoulder and Tyler dislocated his left shoulder.

The Trojans were already incredibly thin at most of this positions, especially cornerback and their game next week against Notre Dame looks incredibly daunting now.

Jared Crick

11 of 11

The Nebraska defense was already giving up way too many points but they be giving up even more after All-Big Ten defensive tackle Jared Crick tore his pectoral muscle and will miss the rest of the season.

Thankfully for the Huserks, they have a bye-week this week which will give them more time to prepare for a season without Crick.
