Occupy Herbstreit: College Football Fan Trolls Occupy Wall Street Demonstrations

Zachary D. RymerOct 13, 2011

There is a time and a place for everything. For college football fans, the only time it is acceptable to suck up to both ESPN and college football in general is behind the set of College Gameday.

Or you could do it in New York. In the midst of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations. With no "College Gameday" set in sight. That is also acceptable.

I didn't think I would ever come to this conclusion, but a Tumblr account titled "Occupy Herbstreit," a direct reference to ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, really opened my eyes. In it, a college football fan has posted pictures of himself holding up humorous college football signs in the middle of the Wall Street protests.

Naturally, the signs cleverly mock the typical Occupy Wall Street rhetoric.

For example, I bet you didn't know that our economy is crashing this fast:

My personal favorite is a jab at Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer:

And then there's this delightful take on the Big 12 Network:

You get the point. What we have here is a fan who is very knowledgeable of college football, and who is also kind of a jerk.

In other words, he is doing the act of trolling quite correctly.

Because I prefer to live my life in a cone of isolation that protects me from the evil forces at work in this world, I have no idea whether or not this guy is being horribly insensitive. But since he's essentially making a joke of a movement that is meant to draw attention to the rampant economic problems in this country of ours, I would understand if people think this guy is indeed being insensitive.

But hey, if you have a gripe with this guy, you're more than welcome to travel to New York and confront him. Just don't be surprised if his response goes a little something like this:
