BCS Rankings 2011: Clemson, Georgia Tech and Teams Sure to Be Underrated

Patrick ClarkeOct 13, 2011

The college football season's first BCS standings are set to be released following this week's action. When the dust settles, several teams are sure to be left scratching their heads.

Among some of the underrated programs are sure to be the ACC's undefeated teams Clemson and Georgia Tech, who have outplayed preseason conference favorites Florida State and Virginia Tech.

Despite their 6-0 record, the Yellow Jackets are ranked just 12th in the AP Top 25, behind one-loss Oregon and Arkansas.

Clemson, also 6-0, is ranked eighth behind seven other undefeated teams, despite having easily had a tougher schedule than teams like Wisconsin, Boise State and Stanford.

The Tigers defeated Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech over a span of three weeks when each team was ranked in the Top 25.

Georgia Tech and South Carolina are now the only obvious road blocks in the way of a perfect season for Clemson.

Other teams sure to be underrated when the first BCS standings are released next week include Michigan, Kansas State and Illinois.

The Fighting Illini are surprisingly 6-0, despite doing it against a subpar schedule, while the Wolverines are back among the Big Ten's elite at 6-0.

Kansas State's 5-0 record features an upset win over Heisman candidate Robert Griffin III and Baylor, as well as a road win over Al Golden's Miami Hurricanes.

Still, the Wildcats are ranked just 17th in the country, while Big Ten breakthroughs Illinois and Michigan have failed to crack the top 10.

With a top three certain to feature LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma, the rest of the top 10 is up for grabs.

Some teams will rise because of reputation, while others will be left out for the same reason.

Clemson and Georgia Tech deserve to be in the top five, but will undoubtedly be underrated along with the aforementioned programs when the first BCS standings are released next week.
