BCS Polls 2011: Oklahoma State Will Lead Overrated Teams in First Ranking

Adam WellsOct 12, 2011

The first BCS rankings are set to be released on Sunday night. It is always an interesting time because we see just how much, or how little, the computers think about the bodies of work of the top teams in college football through the first eight weeks of the season.

While we can infer where most teams will be, based on where they are ranked in the AP and Coaches polls, there are always going to be some noticeable differences.

One team that is going to be ranked higher than it should be when the standings come out is Oklahoma State.

According to ESPN.com BCS guru Brad Edwards, the Cowboys are in the top tier of teams with LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma.

Mike Gundy's team is fun to watch, they lead the nation in scoring offense (51.4 per game) and have a great quarterback-wide receiver combination in Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon. But they are not one of the four best teams in college football.

They beat an overrated Texas A&M team with a miracle comeback in the second half, and travel to Austin this week to play a Texas team that is starting nearly 20 freshmen and coming off a 38-point loss to Oklahoma.

So we are supposed to believe that they belong in the conversation with LSU, Oklahoma and Alabama? I am not buying it.

Edwards wrote that the BCS computers believe that the Big 12 is the strongest conference in America, which bumps Oklahoma State's ranking up even more.

The controversy is going to start early with the BCS this season. I don't know on what deserted island with no hope of rescue these computers are at, but the Big 12 is not the best conference in the country.

There is a lot of depth in the middle of the conference, but none of those teams—Kansas State, Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M—after Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, are going to compete for a BCS game. None of those teams would last if they played in the ACC, SEC or Big Ten.

Oklahoma is great, and they deserve to be in the same category as LSU and Alabama, but Oklahoma State is a fun offensive team that will get exposed when they play a team with a good defense. It has happened in past years, and it will happen again this season.
