Arizona Wildcats Fire Mike Stoops: Predictions of Next 7 Coaches Who Could Go

Johnathan CaceOct 11, 2011

Arizona Wildcats' Mike Stoops was the first major coaching casualty of the 2011 college football season.

New Mexico fired Mike Locksley, but Arizona is in the Pac-12 and has had a lot more success in recent years.

It is impossible to predict the ever-changing world of college football, but here are some of the major coaches who could be fired in the near future.

Honorable Mentions

1 of 8

Joker Phillips

The Wildcats were actually ranked not too long ago, but they have just gone off the deep end without do-it-all receiver Randall Cobb. Phillips should get another year but the pressure to succeed in the SEC may force Kentucky’s hand.

Luke Fickell

Ohio State is a loyal program so Fickell should get another year, but the Buckeyes have not been impressive in almost any capacity.

Mark Richt

He was squarely on this list at the start of the season, but with a win last week over Tennessee, Georgia could be the team to beat in the SEC East.

Frank Spaziani

Boston College’s first year under “Coach Spaz” was pretty good, but they have just been pitiful in 2011. However, injuries have also hampered this team and he should get the benefit of the doubt.

Houston Nutt

2 of 8

The Rebels have gotten progressively worse under Nutt and this is their worst season yet.

Ole Miss is 2-3 with wins over Southern Illinois and Fresno State and a 23-point loss to Vanderbilt.

The SEC West is now without a doubt the best division in all of college football, and Mississippi needs to make a change in order to avoid being a doormat.

At the very least, Nutt is seriously overpaid at $2.75 million per year.

Rick Neuheisel

3 of 8

You have to give credit to Neuheisel for trying, but he has just not produced results in one of the most fertile recruiting areas in the entire country.

The Bruins went 4-8 last season, and will be right on the border of bowl eligibility by the end of 2011. But a .419 winning percentage during his tenure won’t cut it for UCLA.

Their rival USC is down and this is the time to pounce. There is no pouncing with Neuheisel.

Mike Riley

4 of 8

He may be in his 11th year at Oregon State, but Mike Riley is definitely on the coaching seat after a 1-4 start to the season, including a loss to Sacramento State.

The Beavers didn’t go to a bowl last year and at some point, enough is enough.

That time should be now.

Everett Withers

5 of 8

It’s hard to argue with the production of North Carolina on the field, but this team was going to be good no matter who the coach was.

Withers was named the interim head coach following Butch Davis’ firing just before the season started.

The Tar Heels just spent a bunch of money on expanding their stadium. It doesn’t seem likely that they will keep an unknown at head coach when there are other more experienced and noteworthy guys out there.

Jeff Tedford

6 of 8

Tedford has been at Cal for nine years, but failed to get to a bowl game last year. In 2011 he will either just make it into the postseason or just miss it.

The Bears have had some amazing players come through the system but the program has continued to decline since their fantastic 2004 season. Fans are getting fed up with it.

He may get another year but won’t survive another losing record.

Paul Wulff

7 of 8

The hottest coaching seat has to belong to Wulff who has a .190 winning percentage in four years at Washington State.

It may be hard to remember, but this team went to the Rose Bowl in the 2002 season and now they are rapidly falling behind in-state rival Washington.

If they can’t go bowling this year, or at least beat the Huskies at the end of the season, Wulff will not be the coach of the Cougars next season.

Turner Gill

8 of 8

Gill was hired to replace Mark Mangino who resigned after he was accused of being verbally and physically abusive toward players. He also led the Jayhawks to their first 12-win season in school history.

The Big 12 appears to be saved, and in order to compete in the revamped league, Kansas needs a coach who has done better than 5-12 in a year and a half.
