BCS Standings 2011: Boise State and 3 Teams Guaranteed to Be Angry
The initial BCS rankings are going to come out on Sunday night, and, as is often the case when that evil entity gets involved in the college football proceedings, there are going to be some upset teams.
Trying to predict what is going to happen with the BCS computers is like trying to predict the lottery—you might get two or three numbers right every now and then, but at the end of the day you can't make heads or tails with any of it.
The best thing to do with the BCS is don't worry about predicting what is going to happen. Instead, just wait for the rankings to come out, then blast them because they are wrong in so many ways.
Sadly, we have to predict what is going to happen with this completely mindless system because it always sparks lively debate.
With that in mind, here are three top 10 teams whose BCS rankings are going to have fans and analysts angry because they are too low based on their current rankings in the coaches' poll.
Boise State Broncos (5-0)
Every year, fans root for Boise State to get their shot in the BCS National Championship Game. They have been one of the most consistent programs in college football for the last six years, and have won two Fiesta Bowls since 2006.
As is always the case, though, fans of the underdog are going to be sorely disappointed when the first BCS rankings come out on Sunday night. Despite being ranked sixth in the coaches’ poll, the computers are not going to look on this team favorably.
They have only played one team with a winning record so far this season—Georgia in Week 1—and while that win will help because it was over an SEC team, it won't be enough to put them in the top eight teams in the BCS when the initial rankings that come out.
They can climb in the rankings as the season moves along, but as things stand right now, Broncos fans should brace themselves for disappointment on Sunday night.
Stanford Cardinal (5-0)
As much flak as the computers give Boise State for not playing a “difficult” schedule, Stanford has played an easier schedule than the Broncos have this season.
The best win for the Cardinal this season has come against...UCLA? The other teams they have beaten include San Jose State, Duke, Arizona and Colorado.
As bad as the schedule has been for the Cardinal this season, I would bet that they manage to get ranked ahead of Boise State because they have Andrew Luck.
Everyone loves Luck; honestly, how can you not? The BCS wants to feature big names to draw more eyeballs to the games, and he is the biggest name in college football right now.
Still, not even Luck can save this team from the cupcake schedule they have played through five weeks.
Michigan Wolverines (6-0)
Brady Hoke has worked some magic in his first season in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines have aspirations of playing for a Big Ten championship and getting in the BCS for the first time since 2007. But they need to temper those expectations when the initial rankings come out.
The Wolverines’ best win was over Notre Dame in Week 2, and that win looks better with each game that the Fighting Irish play, but they have been beating up on bad competition in every other game this season.
Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, San Diego State, Minnesota and Northwestern are the teams on Michigan’s hit list this season.
Denard Robinson is electric and could easily be a Heisman finalist this season, but we have to see how the team performs against better competition in the last six weeks of the season before we definitively say they are back.
