Jose Reyes and the 10 Players Who Could Play Any Position
Over the course of MLB history, there have been only a handful of players who have played every position on the field—from catcher to pitcher and shortstop to outfield. And, although the versatility in baseball may seem a bit diminished nowadays, there are still some quality five-tool players who could manage to find success anywhere on the field.
Here are the 10 players who could make it at any position in baseball.
Ryan Braun
1 of 10Braun won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 2007 and has earned All-Star honors in each of his seasons since. The left fielder can hit, run and play defense very effectively. He'd be likely to find success anywhere on the field.
Jayson Werth
2 of 10Although Werth had a down year last year, he is regarded as one of the best defensively at his position and has the ability to impress in nearly every aspect of his game.
In fact, Werth was originally drafted as a catcher by the Baltimore Orioles.
Michael Young
3 of 10Young has shown himself to be a very versatile player over the course of his career, transitioning through several position changes that span over multiple years. He is now generally used as a designated hitter but has definitely managed to prove himself for the sake of this list.
Justin Upton
4 of 10Upton has truly become one of the best fielders in the NL, earning two All-Star appearances along the way. His future with the Arizona Diamondbacks is sure to be a good one.
Troy Tulowitzki
5 of 10Tulowitzki is a player who thrives, not only offensively, but defensively as well. Particularly with his throwing abilities, the Colorado Rockies shortstop would likely accommodate himself at whichever position he so chooses.
Curtis Granderson
6 of 10"The Grandy-man can (credit John Sterling for that corny phrase)," play any position on the field. His versatility and overall style of play make him an excellent candidate for this list.
Shane Victorino
7 of 10Victorino's speed, range and throwing abilities have given him a name as one the best center fielders in the game. These would come in handy at any position the "Flyin' Hawaiin" would play.
Matt Kemp
8 of 10The 27-year-old Dodger earned his first Gold Glove in 2009 and has only improved since. He currently plays center field, but his skills manning the outfield could be utilized anywhere on the field.
Ben Zobrist
9 of 10Zobrist may not be an obvious choice for this list, but the switch-hitting Tampa Bay Ray has played all over the field over the course of his career. Of all of the candidates on this list, Zobrist may be the leading player.
Jose Reyes
10 of 10The NL Batting Champ is entering free agency as the most coveted player in the game. Aside from the occasional bonehead play, Reyes' speed, agility and overall athletic abilities would land him success at any position.
