College Football Rankings 2011: 4 Top 15 Teams with No Shot at BCS Title
With the BCS rankings just a week away, it is time to seriously take a look at which teams have a legitimate shot at making it to the national championship this year in the Louisiana Superdome.
While there are several teams in the Top 15 that have no chance at all, for the sake of time and length I'm going to keep the list to four more reasonable teams.
No. 5 Boise State
1 of 4Yes, I believe that the Broncos are a great team and will go undefeated this year, but quality wins are going to kill Boise State's shot at making it to New Orleans.
The win against Georgia is continuing to grow further and further away from our minds and the Broncos don't face another quality team for the rest of the year.
TCU is not the same team and when the Broncos play against the Horned Frogs Nov. 12 the win will not do much for the Broncos in terms of BCS rankings.
For Boise State to make the national championship, Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, Wisconsin and Stanford will all have to lose.
No. 7 Stanford
2 of 4Stanford has to be the most improved team in the modern BCS era, but it will still not make the national championship this year.
Yes, Andrew Luck is going to be giving the Cardinal hype all year long, but the quality of wins continues to come up.
Stanford has games against Oregon, USC and Notre Dame in the back half of the season, but even if wins come in each of those games, teams like LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama and Wisconsin will kill the Cardinal's shot at the Natty.
USC is disappointing, Oregon has no real quality wins and Notre Dame still has the opening losses to South Florida and Michigan to remind everyone it is not a good enough team to give Stanford that jump.
No. 9 Oregon
3 of 4I am a hardcore Ducks fan and it kills me to admit that the Natty is not in store for Oregon this year.
The LSU loss put the Ducks in a rough spot. While Oregon is 4-0 since that game, the combined record of Oregon's opponents is 6-16.
If Oregon wins against Arizona State, Stanford and USC, maybe—just maybe—the Ducks can make it to New Orleans, though Alabama, Oklahoma, Boise State and Wisconsin will have to lose.
I don't like the odds, even with the high-powered offense.
No. 13 West Virginia
4 of 4While I am loving what Dana Holgorsen has been doing for West Virginia this year, the loss against LSU destroyed the Mountaineers' chances of making it to the national championship game.
With the Mountaineers playing in the Big East, they will have no chance to really move up the rankings and will never have the shot of playing for a championship this year.
