College Football Rankings 2011: The 5 Most Overrated Week 7 Top 25 Teams

Johnathan CaceOct 10, 2011

It is the midway point in the college football season, and some highly regarded teams have yet to prove themselves in any capacity.

Other teams have played such a tough schedule that despite their losses, are still in the Top 25, though they may not really deserve it.

That said, many of these teams are ranked, because there is no other team to put there.

Here are the five most overrated teams in the latest Top 25 polls.

Stanford Cardinal

1 of 5

The Cardinal have done absolutely nothing to deserve a Top 10 ranking, yet are seventh in the AP and fifth in the Coaches Poll.

The teams they have played are a combined 10-19, yet the Cardinal are still giving up 240 yards per game just through the air.

Andrew Luck is an amazing quarterback, but there is more to a team than a quarterback and Stanford’s best defender, Shayne Skov, is out for the season.

There was already a great deal of inexperience on this team coming into the season, and they have yet to play any team that has come close to challenging them.

Until proven otherwise, this team is overrated.

Texas A&M Aggies

2 of 5

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Aggies have played a very tough schedule—No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Arkansas and 5-1 Texas Tech—but only managed to beat Texas Tech by five points and lost the other two games after leading both.

It was pretty much a given their offense would be good, considering how much talent they had returning, but the defense was also really experienced.

The fact they gave up 40+ points in the last two games is serious cause for concern.

Texas A&M ranks dead last in the country in passing yards allowed per game at 347, and that simply won’t cut it in the Big 12.

Any team that ranks dead last in any major statistical category should not be ranked in the Top 25.

Michigan Wolverines

3 of 5

The Wolverines have been cruising so far and for good reason—they have yet to play a good team.

The closest they came was last week against Northwestern, but the Wildcats just lost leading rusher Mike Trumpy and returned quarterback Dan Persa for the first time.

Michigan still allowed 24 points and were losing until the end of the third quarter of the game.

And this team is ranked 11th in the country? They are a good football team but not that good.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

4 of 5

Speaking of not playing anyone good, Georgia Tech’s opponents have a combined 14-18 record, 9-17 if you don’t include North Carolina.

Their offense has been lights out, averaging 46 points per game, but their defense has been suspect at best.

Until last week’s 21-16 win over Maryland, every team had scored at least 21 points on the Jackets and the Terrapins are 91st in the country in scoring offense.

The Yellow Jackets are particularly poor against the run, giving up over 160 yards per game on the ground alone.

This team will lose to any team that can play sound, assignment defense and run the football, meaning Georgia Tech should not be ranked 12th in the country.

Auburn Tigers

5 of 5

It seems as though voters are just desperate to rank the Tigers.

The defending national champions catapulted all the way from unranked to 15th in the AP Poll last week after upsetting South Carolina on the road.

They then proceeded to play Arkansas and got blown out after the first quarter.

Auburn’s defense is just awful, allowing 439 yards per game, and have given up at least 38 points in half their games this season.

With so many tough teams ahead on the schedule, the Tigers will be barely scraping by for a bowl bid, not a Top 25 ranking.
