BCS Standings 2011: Oklahoma Sure to Be Penalized for Florida State's Struggles

Name me another sport where you have to immediately start rooting for the team you just played?

That's life in the wacky world of college football.

The Oklahoma Sooners had an incredibly impressive win earlier in the year at Florida State when the Semioles were ranked fifth. It was the kind of non-conference win the BCS computers would love.

Yet Florida State has fallen off a cliff since that fateful September night.

Since then they have lost consecutive 35-30 games to the Clemson Tigers and the Wake Forest Demon Decons. From No. 5 to unranked, the Seminoles have taken a wicked plunge. This kills the quality of win for the Sooners and the BCS computer projections are going to reflect as much.

ESPN projects the Sooners to be third in the first release of the BCS rankings as they find themselves fairly far away from SEC powerhouses LSU and Alabama.

One can only wonder how much closer they would be if FSU had won the past two weeks.

It's just another example of how the BCS system is not the answer to figuring out who the best team is.

OU is coming off their most dominating performance of the season with their 55-17 win over archival and 11th ranked Texas.

It was a performance for the ages and their reward is a larger gap between the two SEC teams that have already knocked the Sooners from first to third in the polls despite their perfect 5-0 record.

With LSU and Alabama meeting in November and OU playing Oklahoma State later this year, the Sooners are still in control of their own destiny. Yet if every team drops a game, the Sooners will be behind the eight ball because of the Seminoles struggles and strength of the SEC.

When you don't have complete control of your teams destiny there is something wrong—and Oklahoma is currently finding that out.
