Carolina Panthers: Where Do They Stand in the NFC South?

Joe BarnathanOct 9, 2011

If you watched this afternoon's Panthers-Saints game, you probably realized something: These Panthers can play.

Despite an early interception that set up a touchdown for the Saints, the Panthers' offense was rolling. Between the option to DeAngelo Williams for the 69-yard touchdown and Steve Smith's catch in the first quarter, the offense made a statement.

Cam Newton is a top QB in this league and he's got plenty of options.

Between Olsen and Shockey, he has two formidable looks at tight end and the Panthers' core of wide receivers led by Smith has been impressive thus far. And when the passing game isn't working, they go to work on the ground with Stewart, Williams and occasionally Newton.

For the second straight week, the Panthers' offense has looked confident and in control for most of the game.

The defense today had their hands full.

As frustrating as it was to watch Saints QB Drew Brees find Jimmy Graham essentially at will, you can't fault the Panthers' secondary because Brees was doing what he does best. That being said, the Panthers were a botched PAT and an ill-advised first-half timeout away from a win today.

They really were that close to beating the top team in their division. And while that doesn't count in the standings, it says volumes about the potential of this team.

So while it may seem premature, I truly think this team is the second best in the NFC south.

Tampa Bay has benefited from a weak schedule thus far and you can expect them to struggle against this Panthers team.

As for the Falcons, they have been rather unimpressive. Beaten up by the Bears in Week 1, they've pulled out wins against the Eagles and Seahawks, two teams that have yet to play up to par.

While it will take more than a few games for this Panthers team to battle with the likes of the New Orleans Saints for a full four quarters, don't be surprised to see them surpass their other division opponents by the season's end.
