USA Today College Football Poll: 5 Teams We're Still Not in Love with in Week 7

Ian HanfordOct 9, 2011

The Week 7 edition of the USA Today poll has been released.

Several teams exchanged spots and a few teams fell out of the Top 25 ranks.

The Top 25 consists of contenders and pretenders. Some teams may deserve their current ranks but, based on talent, may not be up to snuff by the end of the season.

Rankings are sure to shuffle many more times before the season ends. Teams currently sitting pretty will find themselves on the outside looking in.

Here are five teams we're still not in love with:

Penn State

1 of 5

Penn State found their way back into the USA Today poll in Week 7. The 5-1 Nittany Lions come in at No. 25 after their Week 6 victory against Iowa.

Despite their ranking, Penn State is very questionable.

Their offense has struggled mightily, especially through the air. Even in victories, the Nittany Lions have failed to shine through with a great offensive performance.

Defensively, the Nittany Lions have been excellent, but better offenses could change that very quickly.

Penn State has some strong areas, but they have too many weaknesses to make any real noise in college football this season.

Texas A&M

2 of 5

Texas A&M is still in the USA Today poll at No. 23. The Aggies are currently 3-2.

The Aggies entered the season with large expectations. So far they have failed to live up to the hype.

Offensively, the Aggies have a great duo in the backfield in Christine Michael and Cyrus Gray. Ryan Tannehill and Jeff Fuller supply the needed firepower through the air.

Defensively, the Aggies have struggled. In the Big 12, that probably will not change anytime soon.

Texas A&M is a hard-nosed team, but their talent on defense is not good enough to take them to the next level.

Georgia Tech

3 of 5

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 6-0 heading into Week 7 of the college football season. That's good enough to have them at No. 12 in the USA Today poll.

The Yellow Jackets have a dominant offense, although it is one-dimensional. The triple option has allowed the Yellow Jackets to have the top rushing offense in the nation, but their passing offense lacks experience and talent.

The Georgia Tech defense has not been tested so far this season. Until they are, it is tough to put any real value on this Yellow Jackets squad.

Georgia Tech's defense and their lack of a proven passing attack will hold them back from battling the elite teams. They deserve their current ranking, but they will come back to Earth.

Nebraska

4 of 5

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are No. 14 in the Week 7 USA Today poll. The Huskers moved to 5-1 with a thrilling comeback over the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 6.

The Cornhuskers only loss was at the hands of Big Ten-favorite Wisconsin. The Badgers handled Nebraska with ease.

Nebraska has a dangerous offense, but it struggles through the air. Taylor Martinez is a dynamic option quarterback, but he is not ready to win a game on his own.

Defensively, the Cornhuskers should be better. Jared Crick, Lavonte David and Alfonzo Dennard are three of the best at their positions, but injuries and lack of teamwork has left Bo Pelini's defense grasping at air.

Nebraska really should be better than they have looked so far this season. Bottom line—they haven't.

Michigan

5 of 5

Michigan currently sits at No. 10 in the USA Today poll. The Wolverines are 6-0 under new coach Brady Hoke.

Offensively, the Wolverines are as expected. Denard Robinson does whatever he wants for the most part. Robinson is as good as it gets in the open field, but his arm is still suspect. Better defenses will force Robinson to win games from the pocket.

He isn't ready to do that.

Defensively, Michigan is better than last year but still not great despite their stellar numbers so far this season. Again, better competition will put this unit to the test.

Michigan is off to a great start to begin Hoke's career.

Robinson's ability to make throws and the defense's continued success will decide if that great start continues.
