College Football Rankings Week 7: 10 Teams Who Got Screwed in the Polls

Ian HanfordOct 9, 2011

Week 6 has come and gone in the 2011 college football season. A new week means new polls and power rankings, the ultimate judgment until the BCS rankings are released.

Different teams have found their way into the bottom half of the USA Today Top 25. Teams in the upper echelon of the rankings have shuffled.

Obviously these rankings will change. The argument can be made only the BCS rankings matter. Teams play the season for a BCS berth.

Until the BCS rankings are released in two weeks, the USA Today poll will be dissected from top to bottom.

Here are 10 teams who should not be satisfied with their given ranking:

Baylor

1 of 10

The Baylor Bears come in at No. 24 this week in the USA Today poll and No. 20 in the AP poll. The Bears are currently 4-1 with a loss to Kansas State.

The Bears have not faced the toughest schedule so far, but the fact is they have one loss. Their offense is very impressive behind Heisman contender Robert Griffin III.

At this point in the season, most one-loss teams should get the nod over any team with two losses. The Texas A&M Aggies have struggled throughout the season but stayed ahead of Baylor in the USA Today polls.

Their resume could come back to haunt them in the end, but as of now, the Bears deserve to be higher in the polls.

Illinois

2 of 10

The Fighting Illini come in at No. 15 in the USA Today poll. Their AP ranking is even lower at No.16.

Illinois is 6-0 this season and deserves to be higher.

Both sides of the ball have been solid for the Fighting Illini. Nathan Scheelhaase leads the offense while the front four leads the defense. Each unit has capable playmakers.

Illinois has not faced the toughest part of their schedule yet. The Big Ten will decide if they are true contenders.

Right now, 6-0 means you are a contender until proven otherwise. Contenders should not be ranked outside of the Top 15. Even if everyone suspects mediocrity in the future.

Georgia Tech

3 of 10

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets come in at No. 12 in the USA Today poll and No. 12 in the AP poll. A solid ranking, but not high enough for an undefeated football team.

The Yellow Jackets have one of the most one-dimensional offenses in the country. It also happens to be one of the most effective. Georgia Tech's triple option attack is the reason for the Yellow Jacket's top-ranked rushing offense.

Granted, the Yellow Jackets have yet to play Clemson or Virginia Tech in the ACC. They have played mid-level opponents for their first six games.

However, their early season dominance is hard to deny.

Arizona State

4 of 10

Arizona State is 5-1. They are currently No. 20 in the USA Today poll and No. 18 in the AP poll.

The Sun Devils have defeated two ranked opponents in Missouri and USC. Their only loss is to undefeated Illinois.

Arizona State will have a chance to prove their success is real in Week 7. The Sun Devils will travel to Autzen Stadium to face off against the Oregon Ducks.

The Sun Devils are not a Top 15 team, but an argument could be made for Top 20. Their two quality victories are solid for an early season resume.

Clemson

5 of 10

The Clemson Tigers come in at No. 8 in both the AP and USA Today polls. The Tigers are currently 6-0 and have an impressive resume.

Two of their wins are against Florida State and Virginia Tech. The Tigers beat the Hokies in decisive fashion. The Tigers also defeated Auburn earlier in the season.

That gives the Tigers three victories against ranked opponents.

Combined with an undefeated record, those three quality wins should put Clemson ahead of Oklahoma State, Stanford and maybe Boise State as well.

Arkansas

6 of 10

The Arkansas Razorbacks come in at No. 11 in the USA Today poll and No. 10 in the AP poll.

At 5-1, the Razorbacks have beaten Texas A&M and Auburn. Their only loss is to Alabama.

A loss to Alabama should be equal to Oregon's Week 1 loss to LSU. The Razorbacks currently have one more win than the Ducks, and more quality wins at that.

The Ducks stay ahead of the Razorbacks because of preseason expectations but the Razorbacks deserve the edge at this point.

Kansas State

7 of 10

Kansas State is currently ranked No.18 in the USA Today poll and No. 17 in the AP poll.

The Wildcats are 5-0. The dispute lies mostly in the AP poll.

Several one-loss teams sit ahead of the Wildcats despite their minor blemish on their record. At this point, the Wildcats deserve the nod.

The Wildcats do not have a bulletproof resume but they do have an upset victory over Baylor to their credit. They are a solid team that thrives on ball control and methodical play.

Bill Snyder has his boys playing ball. The AP poll should give them more credit.

Houston

8 of 10

The Houston Cougars are 6-0. Because of this, they have sneaked into the USA Today poll at No. 22. However, they are No. 25 in the AP poll for Week 7.

If a three-loss Florida State team is still ranked in the AP poll, then an undefeated team must surely find themselves higher among the Top 25. Level of competition to the side, the undefeated team should get the nod every single time.

Houston's offense airs it out with Case Keenum's arm as well as anyone. They are not sound in all aspects of the game, but the passing attack makes them exciting to watch.

The Cougars are not a national contender, but as long as there is a three-loss team in the AP poll, the Cougars deserve to move up the ranks.

Alabama

9 of 10

Alabama is No. 2 in the AP poll. Right where they should be. The USA Today poll has them one slot lower at No. 3.

Oklahoma should still be lower in both polls than LSU and Alabama. Each team has one more win and a better resume at this point in the season.

Alabama has been dominant on both sides of the ball. Their defense is dominant and their offense wears down the opposition.

The Crimson Tide have proven their worth this season. If the season ended today, they should be considered one of the two best teams in the nation.

LSU

10 of 10

The LSU Tigers are currently at the top of the AP poll. In the USA Today poll, the Tigers sit one spot behind the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners.

The Tigers have an indisputable resume. They are 6-0 with four victories over ranked teams.

Their defense has been stifling and their offense has kept pace to ensure several lopsided victories.

LSU plays a tough SEC schedule, and they still stack up their non-conference slate. Despite this, they are still undefeated entering the heart of their conference schedule.

The Tigers should be at the top of any poll until someone comes close to proving them not worthy.
