Arizona State Football: Sun Devils' Week 6 Report Card

Jeff ChaseOct 9, 2011

The No. 22 Arizona State Sun Devils kept things going, claiming their third straight Pac-12 victory on the season over the Utah Utes.

Utah, playing in their first season with the Pac-12, looked to be no match up for the top team in the South division.

The Sun Devils kept things rolling, improving on what has already been an incredible streak of offense and defense within the previous five weeks of the college football season.

The Sun Devils defeated Utah 35-14, and the Utes just couldn't get it together. The win moved the Sun Devils to a 5-1 start, creating an opportunity for this team to go onto great things possibly.

Here is a look at the grades the Sun Devils received in Week 6.

Passing Offense

1 of 4

The Sun Devils passing game was at it again.

Junior quarterback Brock Osweiler completed 25 of his 41 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

Unlike last week's three interceptions and a fumble, Osweiler was able to keep control of the ball didn't turn it over once to the Utes.

Utah just couldn't seem to stop the Sun Devils passing game, as five receivers had at least one catch of 20 yards or more.

As he has all season, Osweiler has continued to spread the ball across the field. Osweiler hooked up with a total of nine different receivers on the day.

Gerell Robinson brought in seven passes for 101 yards while Mike Willie brought in another seven for 98 yards. Two of Willie's receptions were touchdowns.

The other touchdown was caught by Jamal Miles, who the Utes did keep relatively quiet on the day other than the one score.

Running Game

2 of 4

If the Utes did one thing well on Saturday, that was slowing the Sun Devils running game.

Cameron Marshall, coming off huge games against USC and Oregon State, was held to only 47 yards on 21 carries. That comes out to 2.2 yards per carry, which is far off from what Marshall has been accomplishing in his last two games.

The offense was exposing the passing game, though, as it designated more passing plays then running.

Marshall did, however, score another touchdown, his sixth in three games.

Quarterback Brock Osweiler gained 34 yards on seven carries, most of of which were done to complete first downs. The huge number is also credited to a 25-yard run in the third quarter, which set up the Marshall touchdown.

Overall, the Sun Devils only accumulated 74 yards on the ground, far less then what they have put together over the course of the season and their last few games.

Grade: B-

Defense

3 of 4

The Arizona State Sun Devils defense kept up what it has done over the last few games.

Coming into the game, the Sun Devils had forced 13 turnovers on the season. Nine of those turnovers came just in their last two games.

On Saturday, the Sun Devils added another five to that tally. Three of which were interceptions, while the other two were fumble recoveries.

The Sun Devils also only allowed the Utes two score on two drives, once again shutting out their opponent in the fourth quarter.

They held Utah to just 4-of-13 on third down, which is right on par with the Sun Devils' last few games, and allowed 320 total yards. Less than what has happened lately, but still a pretty big number.

In the air, the Utes only passed for 199 yards and threw three interceptions under first time starter Jon Hays. Hays, as expected, looked raw. The Sun Devils' aggressive defense was not the best option for a player's first start.

Still, the Sun Devils were able to come up big when it mattered, holding Utah on third down and forcing turnovers.

Coaching

4 of 4

After the Sun Devils had close calls against Oregon State and USC (even if the scores weren't close, the games were), coach Dennis Erickson seemed to have had his team under control for this Week 6 matchup.

Against Oregon State, the Sun Devils took awhile to get things going, as they looked as if they were playing down to their competition.

Saturday's game started out that way ,too, but quickly the Sun Devils turned things around and took over the game in a heartbeat in the second half.

Penalties continued to be an issue of the past, even though they were higher than the last two weeks at 10 for 77 yards.

Still, Erickson seemed to have his team well under control and called a pretty good game.

The Sun Devils completed 50 percent of their third down tries, and also went two-for-two on their fourth down attempts.

If Erickson keeps up the coaching, he could be looking at a win over Oregon in Week 7, as well as a nice shot at winning the Pac-12 Championship.
