College Football Rankings: Texas, Florida State and Most Overrated 2011 Teams

Matt ShetlerOct 8, 2011

There is the case to be made that polls should not be released until possibly the fourth week of the regular season.

Having a preseason poll really accomplishes only two things. For one, it gives guys like me plenty of things to write about; and secondly, it assures there will be a lot of overrated teams coming into the season.

Let's take a look at some of the overrated teams to this point in 2011.

Florida State

1 of 7

Last week I thought the Seminoles were one of the more disappointing teams in the nation. Given whom they lost to and the amount of injuries the Seminoles have had, calling them overrated may have been a little harsh.

After Saturday's 35-30 loss to Wake Forest, Florida State has officially graduated to an overrated team—probably the most overrated in the nation.

It's hard to say otherwise when the Seminoles began the season ranked in the top five and have now dropped three consecutive games.

Their only wins of the season have been against Louisiana-Monroe and Charleston Southern, leaving them without a victory against a decent football team through the first six weeks of the season.

Texas

2 of 7

Maybe everyone jumped on the Texas bandwagon a little bit too soon.

Texas proved it certainly isn't worthy of being a top-10 team just yet after Oklahoma dominated it 55-17 on Saturday. Top-10 teams don't get blown out in rivalry games.

For the Longhorns, they are just young and that showed on Saturday. They are still a good, young team on the rise, but having them currently ranked in the top 10 means they are way overrated.

Texas A&M

3 of 7

Maybe for the Aggies, the SEC talk was too much of a distraction, or maybe they were simply just overrated.

Starting as a top-10 team with an outside chance to sneak into the BCS to watching this team collapse in the second half of its last two games, Texas A&M showed that it didn't belong ranked as high as it was.

Even Buckeyes fans have to be extremely disappointed with this team.

Ranked as high as No. 15 during the season, Luke Fickell's team has shown it isn't nearly that good. It's had a lot to deal with, including suspensions and quarterback issues, but in its two losses the Ohio State offense has been atrocious.

Missouri

5 of 7

People were up and down on Missouri coming into the season. It had a new quarterback in James Franklin that's athletic enough to win right away, but the key word is "young," and Franklin shows it at times.

The Tigers were a ranked team coming into the season but may have a difficult time becoming bowl eligible.

TCU

6 of 7

Even with the loss of Andy Dalton, many felt TCU could still be a factor, that it would be able to run the football and the Horned Frogs defense is always one of the best in the nation. That should be a simple formula for winning.

Yet, that TCU defense was exposed during Week 1 by Baylor's Robert Griffin III, and things haven't got much better since.

Mississippi State

7 of 7

Mississippi State has been a program on the rise and many people expected good things from it. Its expectations were halted in Week 2 with a loss to Auburn.

Add in losses to Georgia and LSU, and the Bulldogs are performing well below preseason standards.
