Andrew Gonnella Injury: Gruesome Injury Will Derail Maryland Terrapins Season
Andrew Gonnella is Maryland's lone senior offensive lineman. He is now likely lost for the season and this injury is going to derail the Terrapins offense.
Gonnella suffered a serious leg injury on Saturday in Maryland's game with Georgia Tech. He was on the field, in pain, for close to 15 minutes before being taken off by ambulance. The speculation is that he suffered a compound leg fracture.
The injury was gruesome enough that ESPN did not show any replays. After this account, it is easy to see why.
Maryland safety Eric Franklin, as quoted on the Washington Times:
"I didn't see what happened, but I heard people saying there was bone sticking out. We just have to keep him on our prayers and hope for a speedy recovery."
At the time of the injury, Maryland was mounting a comeback against No. 13 Georgia Tech. That comeback bid stalled following the injury and Maryland fell 21-16.
Maryland's offensive line had been one of their strong points. They were averaging 4.5 yards per carry and had allowed just three sacks on the season. This group has now lost its leader.
Here is Maryland coach Randy Edsall, on the topic, also via the Washington Times:
""If he can't come back, he's going to be sorely missed. He's been a great leader for us, and just a guy who loves the game of football. ... Now we have to take a piece of him and go out there and play for him as well."
"
Maryland will not be able to replace his production or leadership, and their offense will suffer as a result.
