College Football Top 25: Why Texas Longhorns Have No Business Being Ranked

Chris HumphreyOct 8, 2011

The Red River Rivalry was more of a bloodbath than a game on Saturday as the Oklahoma Sooners routed the Texas Longhorns on their home turf at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Oklahoma beat Texas in almost every major category besides the time of possession, which the Longhorns led by a good 15 minutes over the Sooners. But winning the time of possession doesn't matter when you get beat by a score of 55-17.

With the absolute beat down that Texas receive, you should not see Texas Sunday afternoon in any of the top 25 polls when they are released.

The Longhorns’ offense never got into a rhythm as the unit had five turnovers that included three fumbles and two interceptions against the Sooners’ tough defense.

Speaking of the tough OU defense, the defensive unit scored on three of those aforementioned turnovers. There were fumble returns of 55 and 56 yards in addition to a 55-yard interception.

In reality, Oklahoma didn’t need the strong day from Landry Jones, who had three touchdowns and 367 yards passing. The 21 points scored by the defense could have outscored the Texas offense's output of 17 points.

There was some talk in the early part of the season that Texas is back with the 4-0 start, but when you look at the competition the Longhorns faced this season, sooner or later this team would be shown for what it really is: a work in progress.

So with most fans of the burnt orange recovering from the defeat Saturday afternoon, the game today will most definitely show the fans and more than likely some of the players on the sidelines that there is still some work to do in Austin.
