Power Ranking Nike Pro Combat, Under Armour and All of 2011's New CFB Uniforms

Jim SullivanOct 10, 2011

Many people can attest to the power of personal appearance and resulting confidence. Last year, we all were inspired by college football's new look. This year, Nike, Under Armour and Adidas have elevated it to a whole new level.

The Oregon Ducks were the experiment a season ago as a result of a marketing deal with Nike, sporting new looks at every game of the season. People responded to football's foray into the idea of never wearing the same thing twice, and despite conflicting opinions on the change, Nike, Under Armour and Adidas pushed forward with their designs.

You may love them, hate them or be relatively apathetic. The point of any advertising campaign, however, is for you to watch the game and see the colors and designs streak across the field. This in itself will force you to formulate some opinion on them, and whether you realize it or not, associate that opinion with the team itself.

In today's day and age, uniforms can affect a recruit's decision as to where they want to go. Old school designs like Penn State and Alabama are consistent and everlasting. Wearing a "new school" ensemble every game can be exciting though, and to some people, the differentiation between a swish or UA makes a huge difference.

Nike Pro Combat has multiple uniforms, all of which will be coming out this season. There are still many designs waiting to be unveiled by Under Armour, who designed over 250 separate ensembles for the Terps.

As a young football fan, I enjoy seeing such a revamp of old, boring uniforms. We rank all the new designs for the 2011 season. Watch out for these eye-catchers that come out or have already been shown off this season.

49) Western Kentucky

1 of 49

Western Kentucky is going backwards. There is nothing special and nothing bold. It's boring, and even though you can tell they're trying to go old school, it's not working.

48) Wyoming

2 of 49

Wyoming has an interesting color scheme that doesn't need to be shown off further. They certainly are trying, but it's like looking at the Denver Broncos throwbacks, which are just as bad.

47) North Carolina State

3 of 49

Bland and boring. The Wolfpack just went out and made everything worse by making sure everyone knows that they are North Carolina STATE. I am not a fan.

46) Bowling Green

4 of 49

Way too much orange. It's literally everywhere. Tone down the orange a little and we'll talk, but no, I do not like these.

45) Washington State

5 of 49

The off-gray really throws off the class to these uniforms. The helmets are strange looking and don't match the jerseys. The pants look ridiculous.

44) Colorado

6 of 49

The gold doesn't match and the added stripes are not a huge impact. The font is kind of strange. Nice try but I'm not for it.

43) Marshall

7 of 49

Not really that big of a difference from the old uniforms, but adding "The Herd" below the collar isn't really making it any better. Not anything to turn any heads so not that high in the rankings.

42) Indiana

8 of 49

They used to have these ridiculous shoulder stripes. Now, Indiana moved them to their pants, which is much, much, much better. Still boring.

41) Troy

9 of 49

The Trojans didn't change much except for enlarging their logo. You can't really go wrong there, but that's not enough to really mean something to this whole new uniformpalooza.

40) Tulsa

10 of 49

Do you see the two white stripes in between the red and blue stripes? That's what Tulsa changed. Bland, but it was in honor of Wilson Holloway, No. 71.

39) Houston

11 of 49

The Cougars made "HOUSTON" much bigger and then rounded it around the top. The red is a strange tint, and the helmets have an old school font for the logo. Not bad, but not exactly what people nowadays are looking for.

38) Texas Tech

12 of 49

Texas Tech doesn't go for a super bold look, but overall, the Red Raiders look dangerous with the new uniforms. The all black look might be hot on the field, but they'll definitely look sharp. Could be better, could be worse.

37) UTEP

13 of 49

The Miners finally get rid of that strange orange color and tone it down. It clashes a lot better, and they remind me a lot of the Denver Broncos. Overall, not bad at all.

36) Temple

14 of 49

They still haven't fixed those ridiculous pants, but the helmets are much better than before. I'll give the Owls the nod.

35) Kansas

15 of 49

Kansas made the "Kansas" on the front bigger and changed the font of the numbers. Overall, no huge changes, and KU still looks just fine.

34) Florida International

16 of 49

The gold and navy blue creates a great combination for Florida International. They got rid of the gold stripe on the shoulder though, instead vying for all blue jerseys. Overall, decent change.

33) Boston College

17 of 49

Again, not much change so not much impact. The new all white is kind of cool though while the helmets are still old school.

32) Louisiana-Lafayette

18 of 49

Simplistic with a touch of elegance, the Rajin' Cajuns aren't looking to attract too much attention. The number design is interesting though and certainly provides a kick to the uniform.

31) Western Michigan

19 of 49

Western Michigan does have a nice color scheme set up and the double stripe looks good for the helmet. Face mask is solid and clashes well against the gold. Overall, just a nice improvement.

30) Virginia Tech

20 of 49

The new part is the orange pants which look somewhat awkward. At least it matches, but that is the wrong color to exemplify from what choices they have.

29) Southern Miss

21 of 49

The matte black finish is awesome and the numbering, which is similar to Alabama's, is old school. The Southern Miss logo is definitely cool looking. I like what they did with it.

28) South Florida

22 of 49

The Bulls thinner numbers and gold/green clash looks solid. USF is certainly very sleek in their new uniforms, especially with three different helmet colors.

27) Fresno State

23 of 49

Fresno State puts a little style into their formerly boring uniforms. The red with black looks solid, and the white has some neat shoulder stripes. The font on the numbers is good as well.

26) Georgia Tech

24 of 49

The numbers used to be black and now they are a strange gold-like color. I do not like that change because it makes the numbers much harder to see. The rest of the jersey looks good though.

25) Kentucky

25 of 49

Not too much of a new look for the Wildcats, but it's better than nothing. The new stripe on the helmets looks good, and the shoulder change is cool on the white jerseys. Kentucky won't be turning any heads though.

24) Michigan

26 of 49

Michigan goes old school with these interesting uniforms. The horizontal stripes on the shoulders look really strange and the number placement/size is off. The "M" is a weird font. I don't like it compared to what they usually wear, but people certainly noticed.

23) TCU

27 of 49

Purple and black is royal. Sleek Nike look with a neat number font, not to mention the all black helmets. This gets a good grade overall.

22) Hawaii

28 of 49

Hawaii looks sharp. Everything about these scream "new school" and should be in the class up there with the bold looks of Georgia, Boise State and Stanford.

21) Florida State

29 of 49

The Seminoles change on the helmets looks great. The numbers look cool, and the jersey shoulder has some kind of design as well. Sweet logo to clash with the black helmet. Overall, good job.

20) Connecticut

30 of 49

Everything in this looks good. The side piping on the jerseys clash well on both designs while the pants' stripe fits in well. UConn pulls it together and puts out a great uniform.

19) Notre Dame

31 of 49

These uniforms are great everywhere except the helmets. The shade of green for the numbers is very nice, and the gold pants looked great. Then the helmets come out and ruin it. The cloverleaf is just weird.  Notre Dame may be the Irish, but a clover leaf is a reach for what belongs on a helmet.

18) Cincinnati

32 of 49

The Bearcats are using a double shade of gray idea, which I like. They couldn't really do this in the olden days, but now, it looks good. There is certainly nothing wrong with these, and Cincinnati will look good out on the field.

17) Louisville

33 of 49

This will make a splash. "The Ville" may be cheesy, but it actually sounds cool, and Louisville will look great in the black jerseys. The color scheme is sweet, and the helmets' new stripes look good.

16) Baylor

34 of 49

Can't go wrong with white and gold. The new green and gold looks tight as well, and the stripes on the pants are differentbut in a good way. Similar to USF, the Bears will stand out in the Big 12.

15) Maryland

35 of 49

The Terps have over 250 new designs ready and waiting for them to use. Under Armour really outdid themselves in Maryland.

They started the season with a uniform based on their state flag. Crazy or not, you have to like the bold look they went after. Points for creativity but a little too over the top for some people's taste.

14) South Carolina

36 of 49

Sleek and smooth. The Gamecocks may have a weird mascot, but Spurrier and company are going to be slick in these new uniforms, particularly the classic white helmets.

13) Rutgers

37 of 49

The Scarlet Knights go all black with these tight uniforms. They nailed this design with all red lettering. Rutgers really impresses with their simplicity as well as how "new age" the style looks.

12) Ohio State

38 of 49

Just plain wow. Everything on this uniform is better. The silver helmets with the red stripe on the middle looks great. The number instead of the logo gives it the "old school" feel on a new style of uniform. The shoulder stripe makes the whole thing a lot less bland. Great job by Nike.

11) Oklahoma State

39 of 49

These are super sweet. The gray helmets are very tight, and the all black uniform is more than awesome. The all gray uniform is very different, but it goes really well with their shade of orange.

10) Stanford

40 of 49

The Cardinal will look solid with these new Pro Combat uniforms. The jerseys may be a bit bland, but the helmets are a very cool gray while the gloves are just as tight as the rest of the Pro Combat designs.

9) Army

41 of 49

Simple and old school, the Black Knights come out in these Nike Pro Combat in the Army-Navy game later this year. The gloves finishes the uniform like no other, and the helmet design looks fantastic.

8) Boise State

42 of 49

The Broncos look great, even though it's all white. The helmets pull off a Pittsburgh Steelers look with the logo only on one side. The gloves are the entire logo as well, which Nike did a great job on. Overall, sweet design and only Boise could pull it off so well.

7) Georgia

43 of 49

Nike outdid themselves for the Bulldogs. These uniforms are amazing. The silver and red helmet style is great, and the collar is tight. The gloves form the Georgia symbol. These epitomize how cool the new Pro Combat line is, and they really stood out when they played against Boise State back in September.

6) Oregon

44 of 49

Obviously I'm a fan of all black, but this is seriously exceptional. Oregon has done some crazy things with neon colors in the past, but outlining the numbers was perfect, and the matte black finish on the helmet is great. They may have lost to LSU while in these, but they certainly looked great doing it.

5) Navy

45 of 49

The helmets are white with a gold stripe which is an interesting change. The anchor on the gloves is particularly intricate. Pro Combat did a great job designing both of the service academy uniforms for the Army-Navy game, and the Midshipmen will exemplify how "new age" a military university can be.

4) Buffalo

46 of 49

Buffalo put on these new uniforms, and they are awesome. The black and blue combination is solid, and the number style is fantastic. Definitely one of my favorite new ones. The design isn't too crazy, and it certainly isn't too boring, which makes it one of the best on this list.

3) Arizona State

47 of 49

Arizona State's new look couldn't get any better. As I've said before, all black is great. The new logo, the new jerseys and the new color scheme all stand out in this era of new uniforms. The Sun Devils exemplify how hot their team could get this year with this sweet ensemble.

2) LSU

48 of 49

Of all the Pro Combat uniforms, LSU has the best gloves. The tiger eyes are awesome looking. The stripes on the helmet clash well with the white, which is unique for LSU. You can't miss the Tigers play in these this month on the 22nd.

1) Michigan State

49 of 49

The Spartans are the nation's best new uniform. The gold and dark green will look amazing. The helmets are solid and for a team that has never worn gold before, and the number font is fantastic. I cannot wait to see Michigan State wear these uniforms for their October 15th matchup versus their in-state rivals.
