Fantasy Football Week 5 Rankings: Calvin Johnson and 5 WRs Ready for Huge Weeks

Dan RenfroOct 7, 2011

Wide receivers are always tough to rely on. It's too easy to disappear in an offense.

With that said, when good receivers get their touches, they will make a difference in the game. Both on the field and in the fantasy world. It's always tough to figure out which players will have big weeks, but every week, there are at least a handful of receivers that put up monster numbers.

I have compiled a list of the five receivers that will be beasts this weekend.

DeSean Jackson

1 of 5

DeSean Jackson hasn't had a very good fantasy year so far, but that's about to change.

While Jeremy Maclin remains Michael Vick's favorite target, Jackson still gets his fair share of targets. With the Buffalo Bills having a pretty weak defense, Jackson should be able to beat them deep. Consistently.

Vick threw the ball well last week, and that should continue this week. With the Bills offense the way it is, this game will probably turn into a shootout. When it does, Vick will be looking deep to Jackson.

Projection: 7 Receptions, 137 Yards, 2 Touchdowns

Greg Jennings

2 of 5

Greg Jennings has been a very solid receiver this year.

And he owes a lot of that to Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has been a monster, and that should continue this week in Atlanta.

At some point, Jennings will have one of his signature explosions. That will be this week. Unfortunately, the only one who could prevent that would be Rodgers.

If Rodgers is spreading the ball around too much, Jennings might not get the necessary targets. However, I don't think that will be an issue this week. Plus, if you aren't quite sure, just remember what Tarvaris Jackson and Sidney Rice did to Atlanta last week.

Projection: 7 Receptions, 126 Yards, 2 Touchdowns

Calvin Johnson

3 of 5

How good is Calvin Johnson?

Let me answer that: very good.

Megatron has scored twice in each of the first four weeks, and I don't see him slowing down any time soon. The matchup doesn't matter for him, and even though the Chicago Bears are usually tough in the red zone, Johnson should have no problem grabbing his pair of touchdowns.

Projection: 6 Receptions, 119 Yards, 2 Touchdowns

Steve Smith

4 of 5

No, the Carolina Panthers aren't a very good football team. But Cam Newton is a decent quarterback, and Steve Smith is a monster on the outside.

He seemed washed up, but with Newton throwing the ball nearly 40 times each week, Smith gets his fair share of touches. Newton has rejuvenated Smith's career, and he has become a fantasy stud once again.

Smith is playing the New Orleans Saints, which also helps. The Panthers will need to throw all day, and the Saints can't really defend against the pass. Smith will be the main option all day, and his fantasy owners will be happy.

Projection: 9 Receptions, 163 Yards, 2 Touchdowns

Roddy White

5 of 5

Unfortunately, Roddy White hasn't been a stud this year. Yet.

He has plenty of targets and receptions, but he doesn't have the touchdowns to make him a top-10 receiver. That should change this week.

The Green Bay Packers haven't quite figured out their defense yet, which is a good sign for White. Not to mention, Aaron Rodgers will be tearing up the Atlanta Falcons defense all day, which means Matt Ryan will have to throw.

Although Ryan has been unimpressive, he will need to throw the ball all day, and White will be looked at plenty of times. Assuming Ryan doesn't disappear, White will have a monster day.

Projection: 9 Receptions, 121 yards, 2 Touchdowns
