Boise State Football: Five BCS Matchups to Die for

Dan VastaOct 7, 2011

It goes without saying that Boise State would need to once again run the table in the regular season to get their third BCS Bowl in the Chris Petersen era.

Two Fiesta Bowl appearances have been a treat to not only the state of Idaho, but also the entire landscape of college football. Having a 2-0 record in the Bowl Championship Series just shows everybody that the Broncos can beat anybody in the country, especially when Petersen gets a month to prepare.

So, this leads the way too early discussion and question as to which bowl opponents would you just pay to go see? I have been praying to see a few teams in a BCS Bowl with Boise State. Now whether it is the BCS National Championship or just a regular BCS Bowl, the season would be considered a terrific year.

However, let's dream big and pretend we could choose who to play in the BCS. Now you can pretend on whether it is a regular BCS Bowl or the BCS National Championship when giving feedback, however, I want to see Boise State crack the top two at the end of the season so the non-automatic qualifiers finally get their chance to play for all the marbles.

So, which team do you want to see Boise State go up against in front of the millions watching?

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

1 of 5

Wait, what! We don't want to see the Broncos hang 40 on the Irish do we? YES!

Now there are a few more teams I would rather have Boise State get a possible BCS Bowl with, however at worst if the SEC winner and Oklahoma were to play for it all, this would be a possibility.

The Fiesta Bowl gets the first two selections in the BCS process (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange) and if the Big 12 runner does not get in the BCS, this is likely to occur.

Plus, a nationwide experience going up against the Irish would be a treat to watch. The Irish still have a long way to go before they reach a possible BCS Bowl as do the Broncos, but in a worst case scenario, I would not mind seeing two of the more entertaining teams in the country to watch.

Notre Dame brings more fans (love or hatred) to their bowl game than arguably any team in the nation. If the Broncos could put a beatdown or just come out victorious against Notre Dame it would be a huge springboard for the post-Kellen Moore era.

Wisconsin Badgers

2 of 5

This would likely be a Rose Bowl matchup that would feature two of the more physical teams in the country. The Badgers would be attempting to get their revenge after they were knocked off last year by the TCU Horned Frogs.

The Badgers are arguably much more complete this season with an underrated defense that refuses to break and a potent offense. Would another non-AQ team be able to knock off the Badgers on New Year's Day on the grandest stages of them all?

The granddaddy of them all is known as Pasadena, California at the Rose Bowl where legends are often remembered for all eternity. Andy Dalton and Tank Carder were able to flex their muscles last season, so could this be a season where Kellen Moore performs under the lights in his final collegiate game?

Moore has meant so much to this program as well as college football, that this stage might be the best place for his Broncos to play.

Oklahoma Sooners

3 of 5

Wow, talk about a heavyweight battle of a rematch from one of the greatest BCS Bowls of all-time. The 2007 Fiesta Bowl brings back a ton of memories where, "The Statue of Liberty" ended up deciding this game in overtime where the Broncos prevailed, 43-42.

This Boise State team is more than just a one trick pony because they beat you up on both lines of scrimmage. A weakness of Boise State that most would argue outside of Idaho would be the secondary.

The Sooners may have the most explosive offense in the nation led by quarterback Landry Jones and receivers Ryan Broyles and Kenny Stills. This could be yet another shootout that ends on the final play of the game.

While some would assume this game would be played for the BCS National Championship, unfortunately there is a better chance of it occurring in the Fiesta Bowl. Crazier things have happened but with the SEC having won five in a row, it is safe to assume that an SEC team will be playing for it all.

Alabama Crimson Tide

4 of 5

This would be an amazing game to die for in the Sugar Bowl at the Louisiana Superdome, but how about the BCS National Championship?

The Alabama Crimson Tide may be the most talented team in the nation as they are loaded with NFL stars on defense. Plus, that Trent Richardson guy is decent in the backfield, I think.

The Tide are stingy on both lines of scrimmage and their back seven on defense could stack up decent against a few NFL teams. The speed would be something special to watch against a Boise State offense that continues to torch the scorebaords.

Could the Broncos offense move the ball against this All-American loaded defense?

I have wanted Kellen Moore to go up against the best SEC style defense for years. Does this have Hawaii-Georgia Part II written all over it? Or perhaps this could be a game to remember for the rest of our lives?

One thing is for sure if the Broncos get an opportunity of a lifetime in the BCS National Championship against Nick Saban's Tide you have to imagine that Chris Petersen will have every imaginable trick up his sleeve.

There may be so much excitement and so much hype built between these two teams that my head might explode!

LSU Tigers

5 of 5

O, baby! The Bayou Bengals have not played Boise State in the BCS thus far, so why not make it happen this season? This could be played in the Louisiana Superdome in the Sugar Bowl, however, there is a good chance this game could played at the Superdome for the BCS National Championship!

The LSU Tigers have one of the most explosive defenses and it is clear that Boise State through the years has had one of the most productive, explosive offenses in the nation.

The SEC still thinks of the Broncos and their schedule as the sisters of the poor who could not carry the jock of the SEC's. However, the Broncos receiving corps could give the Tigers all they could handle in this matchup.

Could the Broncos front four limit the big plays on the ground against one of the premier lines in the nation? Can Kellen Moore have time in the pocket to throw downfield? Doug Martin against that front seven would be a treat to watch and Chris Petersen against Les Miles would be sensational.

Two of the best coaches in America going against each other for all the marbles would be something to die for!

Lastly, Boise State walking into the state of where the SEC lives and where the LSU Tigers play would be a lifetime statement, if they were to find a way to come away with the victory and the National Championship.

Take that SEC!
