Oklahoma vs Texas: Why Landry Jones is Overrated

Randy ChambersOct 7, 2011

Landry Jones first stepped on the Oklahoma campus as a highly-recruited quarterback that was expected to be another great that come from the University.

After two-and-a-half years, I think it's safe to say that he is overrated.

He doesn't deserve all of the hype he has been getting, and if it weren't for the team he is playing for, it may have stopped a long time ago.

The first thing you notice about Jones is his great size—he is 6'4, 229 pounds and with that he already has an advantage at the next level. His arm strength is top notch and is able to get the ball out quick and in a timely manner.

Even with his size he has great mobility and is able to scramble and throw the ball well on the run. He also has great field vision and awareness.

His accuracy isn't bad either as he has improved his completion percentage every year.

But the negatives are a lot longer than the positives are.

All you have to do is let the numbers speak for themselves.

For two-and-a-half seasons at Oklahoma, Jones has thrown for 9,363 yards, 74 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.

The interceptions are one of the main problems I have with Jones. He threw 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions his freshman year. His sophomore year it was 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. So far this season he has thrown 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Anybody else see what's going on here?

He is getting worse as he is on pace to throw for more interceptions this season than his freshman and sophomore year.

Every season he is in the top three of the Big-12 for passes that are intercepted.

Comparing him to Sam Bradford, who Jones replaced in 2009 and the numbers aren't even close.

Bradford played two full seasons and two games before getting hurt in 2009. He finished with career numbers of 88 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions. That means Jones has already thrown more interceptions than Bradford did his whole career in just one season and four games.

They say the stars shine brightest on the bigger stage. Well, anytime Jones plays a good defense he throws two or more interceptions.

Last year against Missouri he threw two and threw three against Oklahoma State. Already this season he has thrown two each against Missouri again and Florida State.

He doesn't handle pressure well at all.

Jones has probably the best wide receiving corp in college football and a great offensive line. There is no excuse for the average performances on a weekly basis.

He is one of the most inconsistent quarterbacks in the country. One week he'll give you a great game of 300 yards and three touchdowns and the next you'll get 200 yards and three interceptions.

If it wasn't for the great defense and all of the play makers that are around Landry Jones, I'm not sure this team would be ranked where they are right now in the polls.

Until Landry Jones proves otherwise he is overrated.
