Florida vs LSU: Can Tigers Win BCS Championship With Two-Quarterback System?

Sean MerrimanOct 7, 2011

Watching the LSU Tigers through the first five weeks of the college football season has been a rare treat.

How rare?

It's not often that you see a team with this special of a defense, but also the ability to dominate a game on the offensive end as well.

It's not often that you see a four-headed monster at running back, with any of the four backs capable of carrying the load in any given game.

But what is even more rare than all the above, is to see a team ranked No. 1 in the country that is in the midst of a quarterback controversy heading into Week 6 of the season.

Jordan Jefferson was slated to be LSU's starting quarterback heading into the 2011 college football season, but an offseason bar fight landed the Tigers' star quarterback in some off-the-field trouble, with potential legal charges attached to his name. Jefferson was in return suspended from the team to start the season, which opened the door for senior Jarrett Lee, who took the job by the reins and ran with it.

Lee has been brilliant since taking over the starting role, leading LSU to a perfect 5-0 record and the No. 1-ranking in the nation. Most importantly, he has shown the ability to manage a game and cut down on turnovers, which had been a glaring weakness of his in the past.

However, despite Lee's current success, Les Miles made the decision to reinstate Jordan Jefferson before the Tigers' Week 5 game against Kentucky. With that move, questions began to arise around Baton Rouge as to how the Tigers are going to use Jefferson and if they can indeed make this work.

So now we ask: Can LSU win a BCS National Championship with a two-quarterback system?

The simple answer is-- Yes they can, but they have to be smart about it.

Jarrett Lee has proven that he is a capable starter at quarterback, and that should not change unless he shows true signs of regressing. He is a capable passer and a solid game-manager, which should remain his role going forward.

This isn't to say that Jordan Jefferson should not see the field at all this season, because that can't be the case when you have an athlete like Jefferson on your team. But Jefferson must accept being a "situational player" for the Tigers, where he comes into games and fills a very specific role.

Jefferson is an athlete who can get it done with his feet as well as his arm. But, Lee is a better passer than Jefferson. When LSU has a situation that calls for a play best suited for Jefferson's skill set, then bring him in. But don't leave him in...That's the key.

This team belongs to Lee, and unless he loses his team's confidence, that should not change.

If Jefferson can accept his role, similar to that of Tim Tebow when he played in situational plays with that Chris Leak-led Florida team, then this can work. It worked well for Florida, which is evident by the team's National Championship that season.

Take a note from that Florida team Les Miles. It worked for them, and it can work for you. Remember, having two good quarterbacks on your roster certainly isn't a bad problem to have.

That is, if you handle the situation the right way.
