NFL Picks Week 5: 5 Reasons New England Patriots Will Win
The AFC East features one of the biggest matchups this week, with the New York Jets visiting the New England Patriots.
The Patriots are going to roll.
Yes, the Jets won in Foxborough in January, and they could really use a win. That won't matter.
Wes Welker Will Survive Revis Island
1 of 5Just when everyone was ready to call Wes Welker washed up, he starts the season like a man on fire.
He leads the lead in receptions (by 13) and yards (by 86), while being tied for second (with teammate Rob Gronkowski) with touchdowns.
Not bad for a guy that was supposed to start declining this year, huh?
He remains one of the hardest workers in the league, which has facilitated his recovery from knee surgery. Not to mention, he is one of the most reliable receivers in the league. Tom Brady trusts him to go over the middle and pick up a first down, regardless of the situation.
However, Welker will (most likely) have to evade the beast that is Darrelle Revis. Despite taking a journey to Revis Island, I think Welker will still have a big day. No, he probably won't have over 200 yards receiving, but I do think Welker will eclipse the century mark, while catching at least one touchdown.
Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez Are Too Tough to Stop
2 of 5Rob Gronkowski is one of the best pass-catching tight-ends in the league.
He's big, he has good speed and he has soft hands. Then, in the red zone, all of those qualities become twice as dangerous, which is why he's having such a monster year.
Not to mention, there's practically two of him. Aaron Hernandez is just as good of a tight-end, and Tom Brady loves to throw to both of them.
Hernandez was back on the practice field Friday, and he is expected to play (at least some) on Sunday. When he plays with Gronkowski, the Patriots are nearly impossible to defend.
The Jets might be able to stop one tight-end. But, there is no way Rex Ryan can figure out a way to stop both of these monsters. At least one of them will have a monster game this Sunday.
Jets Are Reeling
3 of 5The New York Jets are not playing good football.
They started out the season 2-0, but they have dropped their past two games, including an embarrassing loss in Baltimore last week, where they didn't even score an offensive touchdown.
Now, I think the Jets are a good team. Although they haven't been able to run the ball, I think Rex Ryan is a good enough coach to figure out the problems. At least, he should be able to figure them out.
That being said, this is not the week to get it straight. No, the New England Patriots don't have a very good defense. In fact, they have the worst pass defense in the league. Unfortunately, Mark Sanchez has looked pretty terrible this year.
The Jets don't have what it takes to exploit the Patriots weaknesses. Not to mention, they are not in the right mental state to take down such a good team on the road.
The Jets are a mess, and you can't be a mess and hope to beat the Patriots.
Jets Are Winless on Road This Year
4 of 5In order to win on the road in the NFL, you need to have a good defense, good coaching and a reliable offense.
The New York Jets only have two of those things.
Until the Jets know they can score consistently, they won't be able to win road games. They have played away from home twice this year, and they have three offensive touchdowns in those games.
That won't cut it. And that's exactly why the Jets are winless on the road.
And that's exactly why the Jets will continue to be winless on the road. The defense can only do so much for them. The offense needs to figure out its identity and the best way to win. Until then, the Jets will only be winning home games.
Tom Brady
5 of 5Oh yeah, the New England Patriots still have Tom Brady.
That's usually a nice thing to have.
Brady has been unbelievable this year, and that won't stop this week. He might not throw for 400 yards, but you can bet he will be efficient. The Jets like to throw all kinds of packages at Brady (they have to), but he will keep the game simple and pick them apart.
Brady knows that his defense will be able to stop the Jets offense, so he just needs to avoid turnovers. After his embarrassing showing in Buffalo, I think he will avoid throwing picks for the foreseeable future.
Brady will take care of the ball, march his team down field and dominate the Jets this weekend.
