FC Barcelona Fined $148,000 by UEFA over Super Cup Incidents

Roberto Alvarez-GallosoOct 7, 2011

UEFA has just announced that it will fine FC Barcelona $148,000 for incidents related to its August 2011 Super Cup victory over FC Porto in Monaco. The news was reported by the Associated Press and published in The Telegraph

The first reason for the fine was the arrival of Barca two minutes late after halftime in the Stade Louis II in Monaco.

The second reason was the Barca supporters lighting up 10 flares during the match. FC Barcelona has about three days in which to launch an appeal against the fine.

I would like to take advantage of this news story to add my opinion on this matter. UEFA did the right thing in fining FC Barcelona with regards to the flares and arriving late.

The flares lit up by Barca supporters in the stadium were dangerous. What would have happened if the flames were to spiral out of control? The burns that could occur to an individual close to the flares can be deep when not used safely.

The idea of arriving late is self-explanatory. During an event, the teams have the responsibility towards their supporters to arrive on time. It is hoped that FC Barcelona learns from this experience.
