Oklahoma Football: 3 Reasons Why Landry Jones Will Not Win the Heisman

Johnathan CaceOct 5, 2011

Landry Jones has worked his way up to becoming one of the best quarterbacks in the country. He is on pace for another 4,500-plus yard season and has one of the best wide receivers to throw it to in Ryan Broyles.

He is one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy this year, but without a lot of help, Jones will get an invite to New York but not win the award.

Here are the main reasons why.

Schedule

1 of 3

The Sooners have already beaten Florida State and Missouri, but they are far from done being tested. They will play four teams currently ranked in both polls and a fifth if you include Baylor who is just ranked in the AP.

Three of those games are on the road, and Oklahoma is just a different team away from Norman. Trent Richardson from Alabama only has to play two ranked teams and Andrew Luck only has to play one.

At some point this season, Oklahoma will lose a game, and that will all but kill his chances because the award typically has gone to the best player on the best team.

Defense

2 of 3

Oklahoma has put up an average of 42 points per game which is 11th best in the country, but their defense, while putting up equally good numbers, has failed to impress as much as other top defense like LSU and Alabama.

They gave up 28 points to Missouri, failed to contain EJ Manuel when he was in for Florida State and are giving up 248 passing yards per game.

It’s not like this is a bad unit, but in the offensive powerhouse that is the Big 12, performances like that against Baylor and Oklahoma State won’t cut it.

Other Players

3 of 3

Andrew Luck can do no wrong in the eyes of voters, and unless he falters or someone else puts up astonishing numbers and highlights, he will win the award.

But there are other players who are pushing for the award like Russell Wilson and Dennard Robinson. If either Wisconsin or Michigan goes undefeated, the dual-threat quarterback would win over the pocket passer.

It may not be what Oklahoma fans want to hear, but Landry Jones, unless he gets a lot of help, will get close to winning the Heisman but fall just short.
