Week 6 College Football Predictions: Landry Jones and 3 Rising Heisman Favorites
The Heisman voters love winners, and those ranked at the top right now happen to do that week in and week out. However, after Week 6 of the 2011 college football season, there will be a few others on the rise.
Andrew Luck is the clear favorite, and since he's set to play the Colorado Buffaloes this weekend he should have another stellar game.
It's going to be very hard to catch him, but should he lose at any point this season then the race should be wide open.
There's been a few players turning heads in the last couple of weeks, and they're going to keep doing so after a stellar showing in Week 6.
Here are three Heisman candidates that will climb up after Week 6.
Whenever a Heisman candidate beats a ranked opponent, the voters take notice. So far this season, Jones has thrown for 1447 yards and 10 touchdowns, as well as two straight weeks of 400 plus yards passing.
He's a quarterback, which has won the position the last nine out of 10 times, and he happens to be leading the No. 3 team in the country. The Oklahoma Sooners QB is ranked sixth among Heisman Candidates, according to ESPN's watch-list.
Jones shouldn't have much trouble against the No. 11 Texas Longhorns because if Iowa State can put 380 total yards on Texans just imagine what Jones, Ryan Broyles and Kenny Stills can do. Expect Jones to air it out early and often against Texas, and in the process he'll take a nice leap in the Heisman rankings.
Denard Robinson
The Michigan Wolverines are surprisingly ranked No. 12 in the country, and Robinson is a big reason why. His defense has stepped up a bunch, but he is still counted on to make numerous plays with his legs and his arm.
Robinson has thrown for 793 yards and eight touchdowns, and he's also rushed for 603 yards and six touchdowns. His six interceptions are hurting him, and probably why ESPN has him at No. 9 on the Heisman list, but he'll avoid turnovers this Saturday against the Northwestern Wildcats.
Northwestern gave up 391 passing yards to Illinois last week, which means Robinson should have a field day and will definitely surpass 1000 passing yards.
Illinois was only averaging around 160 yards passing heading into that game, so I fully expect Robinson to put up some impressive stats both rushing and throwing. Plus, this should be a close game, and once Robinson leads a late comeback it will show voters that he is all about being clutch, which is something a Heisman winner should be.
Tyrann Mathieu
The LSU cornerback has to do a heck of lot to win the Heisman this year, but he's off to a great start. Mathieu has been a huge reason the LSU Tigers are No. 1 in the country, and he's going to make sure they stay that way.
The Tigers host the Florida Gators this weekend, and Mathieu is going to protect his house against a true freshman quarterback. The sophomore corner will be all over the field making big plays to help give LSU the victory.
Mathieu has four forced fumbles, one of which he returned for a touchdown this past week. He has a pick six, as well as 36 total tackles and one and a half sacks.
He's a play-making machine that cannot be stopped, and the entire country is waiting to see what this kid has in store for Week 6. Fans should have no worries though because Mathieu won't disappoint.
