EPL Transfer Gossip: Top 10 Rumours of the Day

Michael CummingsOct 5, 2011

Nearly three months still separate us from the next transfer window in world football.

But the rumours are already flying.

Not that they're all realistic. Carlos Tevez to a club in Dubai? David Beckham to QPR? I'll see it when I believe it (wait, switch that).

Today's transfer rumours are no exception to the crazy rule. Rio Ferdinand in the US? Because MLS thinks he could be the next Beckham? What?

And that's just the beginning.

Here are today's top 10 Premier League transfer rumours. We hope you enjoy.

Rio Ferdinand to MLS

1 of 10

It's all over the web today. Here's one of the better reports.

Apparently, Rio Ferdinand is interested in a move to America and MLS. The club supposedly interested is the Chicago Fire, and they're supposedly saying they want to make him the next David Beckham.

This is all a bit much.

First of all, Rio Ferdinand is not David Beckham. Ferdinand is a defender. Beckham is a midfielder. And more importantly, Ferdinand can't even come close to matching Beckham's worldwide popularity.

That reminds us: For all his worldwide popularity, Beckham still hasn't truly caught on in America. So what makes the Chicago Fire think Rio Ferdinand could do any better?

Like we said, this one is a bit much.

We're laughing. And you should be doing so too.

Carlos Tevez to Dubai

2 of 10

Even more incredible is this item from the same Guardian report about Rio Ferdinand:

"

Talking of players who get all upset because of what their manager tells them to do, the latest comedy side to offer Carlos Tevez a route out of the Etihad Stadium is Dubai outfit Al Wasl…

"

At least they recognize how ludicrous this is. As the Guardian writes, Al Wasl is only being linked to Tevez because Diego Maradona is the manager and the club currently has a boatload of money.

This one isn't going to happen. End of story.

Wojciech Szczesny to Barcelona

3 of 10

Wojciech Szczesny's howling goalkeeping error Saturday doomed Arsenal to defeat against archrival Spurs.

No matter for Barcelona, apparently.

This report says The Best Team of All Time and Evermore is interested in Arsenal's consonant-heavy goalkeeper.

Okie dokie, Bartha. I'm pretty sure most Arsenal fans would say you can have him.

Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal

4 of 10

This is nothing new. Arsenal and Liverpool both have been linked to Jan Vertonghen, Ajax's Belgian defender, for some time now.

The most recent report gives the edge to Arsenal.

With the squad's defensive troubles, and with fellow Belgian Thomas Vermaelen potentially being used to convince his countryman, Arsenal actually seems like a logical destination for Vertonghen.

Christian Eriksen to Arsenal

5 of 10

Just like the Vertonghen rumours, the Eriksen-to-Arsenal business is nothing new.

And like Vertonghen, Eriksen has most recently been linked to Arsenal.

Liverpool is also in the picture, so this one is far from over.

Javi Garcia to Manchester United

6 of 10

Manchester United did diddly-squat at the most recent transfer deadline. Now, however, Sir Alex Ferguson's team has been linked to a bunch of players.

The target du jour is central midfielder Javi Garcia of Benfica.

The reported pricetag is £10 million. AC Milan are also reportedly interested.

"

The 24-year-old enforcer has impressed in Portugal since arriving from Real Madrid for £6million in 2009, and now two of Europe’s biggest clubs have reportedly made him a prime January target.

United are well stocked on centre midfielders, with Anderson, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher all competing for two spots on Sir Alex Ferguson’s team sheet.

However, the reigning champions have been accused of lacking a bit of bite in recent times, and Fergie could well be tempted to make his move for the highly-rated midfielder when the transfer window reopens.

"

Scott Allan to Several Clubs

7 of 10

Scott Allan is a 19-year-old midfielder at Dundee United in Scotland.

Reports have him linked to a three-way tug-of-war between Manchester United, Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion.

Gee, I wonder which one he'd prefer.

Martin O'Neill to Blackburn

8 of 10

From that same report comes a rumour about Blackburn swooping for manager Martin O'Neill.

O'Neill, who most recently managed Aston Villa, has also had spells in charge at Celtic, Leicester City, Norwich City and Wycombe Wanderers. Most recently, he's been spotted on the links yukking it up with non-football types.

That could change soon if the Blackburn rumours are true.

Nemanja Milic to Aston Villa

9 of 10

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Aston Villa is on the trail of Serbian striker Nemanja Milic.

They say he could be available for a cut price in January.

George Green to Spurs

10 of 10

George Green is so young, we couldn't even find a reliable picture of him. So you're stuck looking at Harry Redknapp.

Sorry.

Green is not too young, however, to be courted by Premier League teams. The 15-year-old was reportedly set to sign with Everton the other day.

But now the Daily Mirror is reporting Spurs have made a last-ditch effort to sign him.

This kid better be good. That's all we're saying.

Anyway, what does gazump mean?
