ESPNU Florida vs. Alabama Video: Watch Trailer for "The Play That Changed CFB"
ESPNU will air a new documentary on Dec. 1 called “The Play That Changed College Football.” It discusses the first SEC Championship Game in 1992 and how Antonio Langham's fourth quarter interception changed the sport of college football forever. The trailer is embedded above.
The piece is from ESPN's “Storied” collection about the SEC's history.
The win for Alabama kept its perfect season alive and gave the Tide a chance to play for the National Championship. A game the Crimson Tide went on to win against the Miami (FL) Hurricanes to earn their 12th National Championship.
With the talk of automatic qualifiers and super conferences becoming a part of everyday life in college athletics, it was the SEC who started the trend of building up a conference into a national powerhouse.
And it all started with one play.
A sellout crowd of 83,091 was on hand to watch Alabama's thrilling victory of the Gators in early December of '92. Alabama now draws more than 100,000 fans to every home game at Bryant–Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. A fact that furthers the point of the documentary.
As seen in the video, there are interviews with those involved in the game and how the coaches of today believe that single game impacted the course of an entire sport.
"The Play" also makes the connection between political changes of the era and how they had an effect on the game. Illustrating the reach of a single football game on a national stage.
Also interesting is how they brought players from both sides back out to recreate the play. And how well they remembered it almost two decades later.
While a myriad of other historical plays get a lot of air time on shows like SportsCenter, the trailer of this documentary makes it appear they are set to present a really good argument to the contrary.
