Miami Hurricanes Football: The Return of Ray-Ray Armstrong

Bleacher ReportOct 6, 2011

I have been waiting for this week ever since the NCAA declared him ineligible for four games back in September for taking $788 in benefits.

Everyone, please welcome back Ray-Ray Armstrong.

For those of you who aren't true Hurricane fans or even college football fans, Armstrong will be the guy who is bigger than most of their linebackers, but plays safety.

He is the guy who was voted to the All-ACC team and put on the watch list of three national college defensive award lists: The Jim Thorpe, Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik awards.

Standing at 6'4", 220 pounds, Armstrong is a beast.

From the jersey number to the hair, Armstrong is almost an exact clone to one of the hardest hitting college and NFL players ever, Sean Taylor.

Boy, does Miami need help on defense.

The Hurricanes are going into the Virginia Tech game giving up 202 yards per game, ranked 105th nationally.

Many people don't believe a safety is going to make that much of a difference, but it will.

Armstrong's main strength is being a run stopper, and a very punishing one at that—just ask ex-Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray.

Armstrong did miss a lot of tackles in just his sophomore year and at times was overly aggressive, but it didn't stop him from being third on the team in tackles with 79, and tying him for first in interceptions with three.

Head coach Al Golden has already stated that he will be worked in throughout the game and will not see much more than 30 plays as well as some special teams play, but I have a hard time believing that.

Armstrong is such a special athlete and I truly believe he will be ready to play most of the game, if not all of it.

The way the Hurricanes defense has been playing, there isn't a better time than now to have Armstrong back.
