Georgia Football: 5 Best UGA Victories against Tennessee

Brian JonesOct 4, 2011

When the Georgia Bulldogs and the Tennessee Volunteers face off at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, it will be a turning point for both schools.

The Bulldogs need to win in order to stay in the SEC race while the Vols need to win in order to gain some respect in the conference.

For some, they think Georgia will have a tough time in Knoxville because they have not fared well the last two trips.

But this team needs a signature win and based on what has happened in the past with these two teams, this might be the game where the Bulldogs prove they are worthy of the SEC East title.

Here's a look back at the five best Georgia wins against Tennessee.

Tennessee came into this game as a favorite because they had defeated Georgia the last nine times.

But thanks to the help of Jasper Sanks, who scored two touchdowns, the Bulldogs rallied to defeat the Vols 21-10.

At that point, it was the biggest win of head coach Jim Donnan's career, and it was one of the few times the fans came out of the stands to tear down the goal post.

Georgia improved its record to 4-1 and ended the season at 8-4.

Georgia was down by 10 late in the contest, but Andy Johnson scored on a botched handoff with over a minute left.  The ball popped loose, bounced on the ground and fell into Johnson's arms.

It not so much about the win as it was the call by Larry Munson where he says, "My God, Georgia has beaten Tennessee in Knoxville."

Georgia went on to finish the year at 7-4-1.

The reason this was a great win was it was the largest margin of victory for the Bulldogs at Neyland Stadium with a 41-14 victory.

The play of the game was when Sean Jones recovered a fumble by Casey Clausen and returned in 92 yards for a score.

Georgia would go on to finish the year at 11-3 and win the Capital One Bowl.

In the Bulldogs' national championship season, Herschel Walker came on to the scene with one of the best plays in Georgia history.

He ran over Bill Bates en route for a touchdown to help the Bulldogs defeat the Vols 16-15. It was another great Munson call as he said, "My God, a freshman!"

This was by far the best Georgia win against Tennessee because of the way it ended.

David Green threw a six-yard pass to Veron Haynes with five seconds left to give the Bulldogs the win. Some people call the play the "hobnail boot," but it's really called P44 Haynes.

It was Greene's and Mark Richt's first signature win, and it was a game that Georgia and Tennessee fans will never forget.
