Ranking All 32 NFL Quarterbacks Through Week 4
With the first quarter of the 2011 NFL season coming to a wrap on Monday night, it's certainly safe to say that the league is without a question a passing league. In fact, it's definitely a pass-happy league.
With that being said, players like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Drew Brees are all the best players in the game and all three play the sport's most critical position, quarterback.
As the first quarter of the season is in the books, here are the power rankings of all 32 quarterbacks through Week 4.
32. Curtis Painter
1 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 89.6
Painter was the starting QB for the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night and went 13 for 30 with two touchdowns. If it weren't for Pierre Garcon's two receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns, the 32nd spot on this list might've went to a backup QB from another team.
With that being said—Don't you agree that Curtis Painter is the worst starting quarterback in the NFL?
31. Blaine Gabbert
2 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 62.9
It's a shame that Blaine Gabbert has to be starting right now for the Jacksonville Jaguars, he's simply not ready to be a team's starting quarterback.
Gabbert has all the talent in the world to be a great quarterback, but just not right now.
The rookie has thrown for 387 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 47.8 percent of his passes.
30. Mark Sanchez
3 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 75.9
In the third year of an NFL player's career, it's almost expected that they'd make a significant leap moving forward in the right direction. This has not been the case for Mark Sanchez, in fact, he's regressed quite a bit.
Sanchez has thrown for 1,005 yards while completing a pitiful 55.1 percent of his passes for six touchdowns and five interceptions.
29. Matt Cassel
4 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 75.2
What a major disappointment Matt Cassel has been so far this season. He is definitely not the same quarterback that he was just a season ago.
Cassel has been picked off five times while throwing only four touchdowns. He has thrown for a dreadful 688 yards but has completed 64.9 percent of his passes.
28. Sam Bradford
5 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 70.8
You can definitely say that Sam Bradford has a case of the sophomore slumps during his second year in the NFL.
Bradford has been intercepted only once but has completed an awful 49.7 percent of his passes. On the bright side, he's thrown for 849 yards and three touchdowns—but the Rams are 0-4.
27. Chad Henne
6 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 79.0
Chad Henne has all the talent to be one of the league's better quarterbacks, but he's simply too inconsistent for the Miami Dolphins.
Henne has completed only 57.1 percent of his passes for a solid 868 yards and four touchdowns while being picked off four times.
26. Donovan McNabb
7 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 80.9
I hate to say it, but I think it's time to start Christian Ponder in Minnesota as Donovan McNabb is simply not working out as the team's starting quarterback.
McNabb has not been productive, with only 680 passing yards and four touchdowns compared to two interceptions. It's almost like McNabb is afraid to make a mistake, so he opts for the much safer check-down pass on far too many plays.
25. Tarvaris Jackson
8 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 80.0
So far it's been a shaky ride for Tarvaris Jackson during his first year as a starting quarterback with the Seattle Seahawks.
Jackson has completed a solid 62.2 percent of his passes for 846 yards and five scores, but has been picked off four times.
24. Rex Grossman
9 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 78.7
Somehow, someway Rex Grossman has found a way to led his Washington Redskins to a very surprising 3-1 start in the NFC East.
Grossman has thrown five interceptions on the year, but has scored five touchdowns and completed 58 percent of his passes for 989 yards.
Thank god that Redskins can run the ball with Tim Hightower and Ryan Torain.
23. Andy Dalton
10 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 76.9
Andy Dalton appears to be a rising star in the NFL as he's got all the talent and upside to do so.
The rookie out of TCU has been a superb job as a rookie starter for the Cincinnati Bengals this season with four touchdowns thrown, four interceptions and 868 passing yards.
22. Kyle Orton
11 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 80.9
I hate to be that guy, but is it time to start Tim Tebow?
Kyle Orton has been rather mediocre this season for the Denver Broncos as he's thrown for 945 yards and eight touchdowns while being picked off an embarrassing six times.
Is it Tebow time?
21. Ben Roethlisberger
12 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 80.2
It's amazing how a team that made it to the Super Bowl a year ago could be so sloppy and inconsistent just a year later.
Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers simply have not been the team that made it to the Super Bowl last season.
Big Ben has thrown a pitiful five interceptions while completing 61.6 percent of his passes.
20. Jay Cutler
13 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 77.8
Jay Cutler's 2011 season has been shaky to say the least.
The Chicago Bears quarterback has been far too inconsistent to be considered one of the league's better quarterbacks, as he's completed only 54.2 percent of his passes and four interceptions. However, Cutler has thrown for 960 yards and five touchdowns.
19. Colt McCoy
14 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 78.7
Colt McCoy is by far not the league's most talented quarterback or even one of the league's more productive quarterbacks, but he's got guts and I absolutely love that.
McCoy has thrown for 984 yards and six scores while completing 58.1 percent of his passes and being picked off three times.
The second-year quarterback out of Texas has led his Cleveland Browns to a solid 2-2 start, which is good enough for second in the AFC North.
18. Joe Flacco
15 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 79.9
If Joe Flacco didn't have a dominant defense backing him up, then the Baltimore Ravens would be a very bad football team.
Flacco has struggled at times this season with a dreadful 49.3 completion percentage, but he's somehow found a way to accumulate 973 passing yards and seven touchdown passes.
17. Josh Freeman
16 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 81.1
Josh Freeman certainly does not have the greatest numbers and not the best passer rating, but that could be credited to his four interceptions and only three touchdowns thrown.
Already this season, Freeman has rushed for over a 100 yards and two touchdowns. He can be a threat on his feet but the Bucs' offense has been struggling so far this season.
16. Jason Campbell
17 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 89.1
Jason Campbell has been a pleasant surprise for the Oakland Raiders this season as he's led them to a solid 2-2 start in the AFC West.
Campbell may not be the league's greatest quarterback, but he's definitely efficient. The former Auburn Tiger has thrown for 928 yards and four touchdowns while completing 65.3 percent of his passes and being picked off three times.
15. Kevin Kolb
18 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 87.0
2011 should be considered Kevin Kolb's first-year as a starting quarterback, not 2010. So far, Kolb has been rather impressive in his first year in Arizona.
Kolb has completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,049 yards and five touchdowns and appears to have developed a solid relationship with Larry Fitzgerald.
If Kolb gets the ball to Fitz, then things should be fine for the 27-year-old out of Houston.
14. Matt Ryan
19 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 84.8
Matt Ryan has struggled tremendously this season along with the entire Atlanta Falcons team.
Ryan has completed 62.2 percent of his passes while throwing six touchdowns but has been picked off four times.
Matty Ice and the Falcons need to turn things around fast, as 2-2 is unacceptable for a team this talented.
13. Tony Romo
20 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 92.9
You may call Tony Romo a choker, as I certainly do, but he still puts up solid numbers—but he's awful in crunch time.
Romo has thrown for 1,273 total passing yards and thrown seven touchdowns but has been intercepted five times.
2011 has been a shaky year for the Dallas Cowboys' starting quarterback.
12. Michael Vick
21 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 91.9
Michael Vick is only the 12th best quarterback in the NFL right? You bet.
I will admit that Vick has the talent and potential to be one of the league's elite, but this is 2011, not 2010—Vick is not the same quarterback that he was a year ago.
I do realize that Vick is being knocked around and that he's behind one of the league's worst offensive lines, but he's simply not producing as his Eagles' are standing at a disappointing 1-3 record.
Vick has completed 61.2 percent of his passes for six touchdowns and three interceptions while running for 228 yards on 32 carries.
11. Alex Smith
22 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 97.7
It appears that Alex Smith is producing rather nicely in Jim Harbaugh's offensive system in San Francisco.
The 2005 first overall pick has been somewhat of a bust until this point of his career, as he's led the 49ers to a solid 3-1 start, with one victory coming over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Smith has thrown for only 795 yards and four touchdowns, but he's completing 67.3 percent of his passes while being intercepted only once.
He may not have the greatest numbers, but he's definitely efficient and productive to say the least.
10. Cam Newton
23 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 84.5
Who in the world would have predicted this kind of start from the first overall pick in the 2011 draft? I sure as hell didn't.
Cam Newton has been simply playing like a superstar for the Carolina Panthers and is without a question the early favorite to win offensive rookie of the year.
Newton has thrown for a phenomenal 1,386 yards while throwing five touchdowns and completing 59.5 percent of his passes. On the ground, Newton has ran for 133 yards and four touchdowns.
So far, it's been unbelievable good for Newton.
9. Philip Rivers
24 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 87.7
2011 hasn't been the greatest year for Philip Rivers so far, but he's still one of the NFL's top passers.
Rivers has thrown for 1,286 yards while completing 68.2 percent of his passes and racking up five touchdown passes, but he has been picked off six times.
When 2011 comes to an end, I can guarantee you that Rivers' will have less than 10 interceptions and close to 25 touchdowns, if not closer to 30.
8. Ryan Fitzpatrick
25 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 96.9
Ryan Fitzpatrick may not have the world's greatest arm and certainly does not produce elite numbers, but he's a winner and makes plays when it matters.
Fitzpatrick has led his Buffalo Bills to an incredible 3-1 start to the season, with one of those wins coming against the New England Patriots.
The 28-year-old quarterback out of Harvard has thrown for 1,040 yards while completing 63.4 percent of his passes and throwing nine touchdowns.
7. Matt Hasselbeck
26 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 104.7
Who would have thought that Matt Hasselbeck would have led the Tennessee Titans to a 3-1 record through the first four weeks of the season while ranking fourth in the NFL in quarterback rating? I can guarantee that no one could of predicted this.
Hasselbeck looks like the quarterback he led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl appearance back in Super Bowl XL.
The Boston College product has thrown for 1,152 yards, eight touchdowns while being intercepted three times.
6. Matt Schaub
27 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 101.7
If the Houston Texans are going to run away with the AFC South division title, it's going to because of the dominant play from quarterback Matt Schaub.
So far, Schaub has led the Texans to a solid 3-1 record while he's thrown for 961 yards, seven touchdowns while being picked off only three times.
5. Eli Manning
28 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 105.6
Despite Eli Manning's struggles in Week 1 against the Washington Redskins, he's been lights-out.
Manning has completed 64 percent of his passes while racking up 1,066 total passing yards and tossing eight touchdowns while being intercepted only twice.
If Manning can limit the interceptions, he'll be in the debate of who's the league's elite quarterbacks.
4. Drew Brees
29 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 102.9
Drew Brees may have thrown four interceptions on the season, but he's tossed 10 touchdowns and accumulating 1,410 yards through the air—New Orleans' passing attack is almost unstoppable with Brees at the helm.
Ever since the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV a few years back, Brees has emerged as an elite quarterback and has yet to slow down.
3. Matthew Stafford
30 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 100.4
When healthy, Matthew Stafford is one of the league's top quarterbacks and he's proving that this season with an incredible 4-0 record.
In those four wins, two of them were comeback victories against the Dallas Cowboys and the Minnesota Vikings. Stafford practically has ice running through his veins.
So far this season, Stafford has thrown 11 touchdowns while completing 62.1 percent of his passes for a grand-total of 1,217 passing yards.
2. Tom Brady
31 of 32Stats Through Week 4: 111.3
Despite Tom Brady's four interceptions in New England's Week 3 loss against the Buffalo Bills, he has been unstoppable.
The reigning league MVP from a year ago has led the Patriots to score 30 or more points in every game so far this season as he's tossed 13 touchdowns while accumulating a mind-boggling 1,553 yards in only four games.
At this rate, TB12 is on pace to throw for 6,212 yards—that's 1,128 more yards than Dan Marino's single season record of 5,084 yards.
1. Aaron Rodgers
32 of 32QB Rating Through Week 4: 124.6
The reigning Super Bowl MVP is by far the league's most dominant player—there's almost no debate.
Aaron Rodgers became the first player in NFL history to throw for 400 yards, throw four touchdowns and run in two touchdowns in a single game this past week against the Denver Broncos.
So far this season, Rodgers has led his Green Bay Packers to an impressive 4-0 record as he's thrown a total of 12 touchdowns while being intercepted only two times and completing a remarkable 73.1 percent of his passes.
As of right now, there is no one better than Aaron Rodgers.
