College Football Rankings: 5 Biggest Games of Upcoming Weekend

Austin FoxOct 4, 2011

Week 6 of the college football season has arrived. Conference play has officially begun.

We will slowly see who the true contenders are in each conference and find out who the weaker teams are as well.

There are quite a few big games this upcoming weekend.  Here's a look at the five biggest games to keep an eye on this weekend.

5. Georgia @ Tennessee (7:00)

1 of 5

This is a huge game in the SEC East.  At this point, Georgia almost has to be the favorite to win the division, despite their 0-2 start.

If Georgia wins this game, their game with Florida on Oct. 29 will be absolutely huge.  That could potentially decide who wins the division.

A Nov. 12 meeting with Auburn will be big as well, but at least it's at home for the Bulldogs.

Tennessee, on the other hand, probably doesn't have a realistic shot at winning the East.

They have LSU and Alabama coming up in back-to-back weeks.  Nobody expects them to win either of those, but if they can beat the rest of their opponents, maybe they would have a slim shot.

They have to win this weekend though.  Starting 0-2 in SEC play would be devastating.

Georgia should probably be the favorite, but don't be surprised at all if Tennessee wins.

4. Auburn @ Arkansas (7:00)

2 of 5

Realistically, Auburn does not have a shot at winning the SEC West.  Arkansas may have a slight chance, but even that is being optimistic.

If the Razorbacks win the rest of their games leading up to their showdown with LSU, that game could potentially decide the SEC West.

However, it's at LSU, so the Tigers will be favored.

What Auburn did this past weekend surprised a lot of people.  Not many people expected them to go into South Carolina and win.

However, it's probably not as impressive as one might think.  South Carolina was extremely overrated at No. 10 and it showed.

The Gamecocks could finish as low as third in their division.

Auburn proved that they may be a little better than people expected, but they're still not great.

Look for Arkansas to definitely win this game, but Auburn will keep it reasonably close.

3. Ohio State @ Nebraska (8:00)

3 of 5

Some may say that it is absurd to have this as one of the best games of the weekend, especially after the way both teams played last week.

Even though they both looked awful, it is still a big game in the Big Ten.

It is especially big for Nebraska.

Realistically, Ohio State doesn't look like they have much of a chance at the Leaders Division, so they don't have a whole lot to play for.

Nebraska, on the other hand, will have to fight like crazy to win the Legends Division.  If they lose this game, somebody like Michigan would almost have to become the favorite for the division.

However, don't expect Nebraska to lose this game.  It's at home, and they'll be looking for their first ever Big Ten win over this clueless Buckeye team.

The Bucks don't look like they have any idea how to win.  How in the world are they going to move the ball on this Nebraska defense?

Even though Nebraska's defense doesn't look like it's as good as people thought it would be, it's still solid.

This game certainly won't be a blowout, but it likely won't come down to the final minutes either.

2. Florida @ LSU (3:30)

4 of 5

Again, some people might say that this game doesn't deserve to be one of the best of the weekend after the way Florida played last week.

But it's still a big game.  Florida can't afford to lose too many games if they expect to keep pace with Georgia in the SEC East.

Nobody expects them to win this game though, and fortunately for them, they can afford to lose it.

Jeff Driskel will get the start for Florida.  Even though he'll probably be a future star, don't expect too much from him in a game like this.

It will also be interesting to see how the Florida defense responds after giving up 38 to Alabama last week.

Will Jordan Jefferson be much of a factor?  It will be interesting to see how this mediocre LSU offense does.

1. Oklahoma vs. Texas (12:00)

5 of 5

Does anybody realize that Oklahoma and Texas are playing this weekend?

It is getting absolutely no media attention.  As recently as 2008 and 2009, this game was being hyped as arguably the biggest game of the year.

The buzz faded last year when Texas came in as huge underdogs and ended up having a 5-7 season.

Texas is currently undefeated and ranked 11th in the country.  Does anybody even know that they are ranked 11th?  They are not being talked about at all.

Honestly though, they do not deserve that ranking.  They will probably go on to lose at least three, maybe even four games this year.

Oklahoma comes into this one again as heavy favorites.  Texas kept it close last year and will probably do the same again this year.

It would be very surprising if Texas pulled off the upset.
