Joe Namath: Broadway Joe Brings More Drama After Jets' Latest Loss

T.J. McaloonOct 3, 2011

"There isn't a quarterback playing this game who is going to be big time if he doesn't have help on that line of scrimmage, It starts up front and there's a major problem for the Jets right now going into next week." Said Hall of Fame and former Jets Quarterback Joe Namath on ESPN New York’s 1059 “The Michael Kay Show.”

This is another in a long line of quotes from the quarterback about his former team about their struggles this year.

First it was Namath taking an issue with the preseason expectations set by Jets’ Head Coach Rex Ryan. He had an issue saying on “The Michael Kay Show”,

“It starts at the top. Coach Rex Ryan I think has been doing a great job getting the team to two AFC Championship Games. But if there's one thing about the athlete, if you keep telling him how good he is, he's going to start believing it, to the point that he may not be preparing not quite the way he should. He may be losing some respect for the other team."

To which Rex had this reply back to Namath,

"I'm confident with our football team. There's no question about it. And, I've told you this many times, I've never gone into a game that I didn't think I'd win. I haven't won them all, but I certainly think we can and will."

So after this latest Jets’ meltdown was it right for Namath to go on the radio to blast his team again. Sure this time it wasn’t aimed at Ryan or Sanchez; but he did call out Jets Wide Receiver Santonio Holmes and Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan saying,

"For Holmes, as a captain, to go outside, to the media, and start pointing fingers. I mean, he's right about the ball getting out late to him, and he's right about the offensive line, but that can create a problem in the locker room. That divisiveness can bury a team. They've got to correct that right away."

For a team that has to deal with being 2-2 heading into New England next week, a team that Rex Ryan called out before the season started, this drama brought on by Namath, Holmes, and Ryan is extremely unnecessary.

This team has enough issues with their running game, their pass protection, and finding a way to stay healthy. They do not need a former quarterback letting his opinions distract a team that at one time was a threat to win this AFC East Division.

If this team falls to a 7-9 finish this year the blame will go to a lot of places; it just shouldn’t go towards a retired Hall of Fame Quarterback and former player.
