College Football Rankings: 6 Teams That Haven't Done Anything to Earn a Ranking

Danny FlynnOct 3, 2011

The Week 6 college football polls are out and it has become clear that we’re now starting to see top teams position themselves for a big second half push.

Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, and Clemson are all in position to really make some noise in October.

It should be fun to see if any of the big three (LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma) get tested before November.

We’ve already seen a number of teams take a free fall in the rankings since the start of the season and we even said goodbye to two more teams after this weekend.

Bye-Bye South Florida and TCU, it was fun while it lasted.

Even with those two rightfully booted, that still doesn’t mean that all of the top-ranked teams are deserving of a spot in the polls.

Here’s a look at six Top 25 teams that haven’t justified their ranking yet.

No. 14 Nebraska Cornhuskers

1 of 6

Every year Nebraska sucks me in and every year they end up disappointing me.

I’m officially sick of Bo Pelini, I’m sick of Taylor Martinez and I’m sick of a Nebraska defense that always finds a way to fall short of expectations.

Losing to Wisconsin on the road is one thing, getting your doors blown off is another.

The big names on that hyped-up defense better start stepping up if the Cornhuskers actually want to contend in the Legends Division.

No. 16 West Virginia Mountaineers

2 of 6

It’s fitting that the West Virginia defense would wait until College GameDay with the national spotlight rolled into town to forget how to tackle.

Did Pat Miller have money on LSU?

Did the kickoff team owe money to Morris Claiborne?

47-21.

Embarrassment.

I love the potential of QB Geno Smith, WR Tavon Austin and this offense, but let’s see if they can get it done against a real defense.

So they put up 54 points on Bowling Green.

What is that supposed to do for me?

In my mind, I still have the fresh memory of Dana Holgorsen abandoning the run by the third drive of the LSU game.

That can’t happen in the Big East this year.

Isiah Pead says so, Ray Graham says so, Darrell Scott says so and Lyle McCombs agrees.

You’re going to need a balanced offense if you want to win in the Big East this year.

Is Dustin Garrison the guy?

We’ll find out, but until then, I can’t rank a team whose only marquee win is a nearly disastrous victory over a Maryland squad that cares more about its uniforms than games.

No. 17 Florida Gators

3 of 6

Will Muschamp couldn’t get the job done against his former mentor Nick Saban, and the truth is, he didn’t even come close.

Florida was outplayed and outcoached in the 38-10 pounding the Gators took from Alabama last Saturday night.

Florida Atlantic, UAB, Tennessee and Kentucky.

What’s impressive to me about any of those opponents besides a mediocre Tennessee team?

The Gators got rocked and now it sounds like QB John Brantley will be on the shelf with an ankle sprain.

The Florida defensive front seven looked strong, well that is until Trent Richardson bowled right through them.

Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps are exciting playmakers, but are they guys that are going to get you wins against SEC heavyweights?

We’ll find out in Baton Rouge on Saturday.

No. 18 South Carolina Gamecocks

4 of 6

South Carolina is technically 4-1, but it feels like the Gamecocks are more like 2-3.

What a massive disappointment this team has been so far this season.

We all heard about the talent, the expectations. We heard that this was the year.

They had all the star names like Marcus Lattimore, Alshon Jeffery and Stephen Garcia.

Lattimore’s actually the only one that lived up to his end of the bargain, though.

Besides guys like Melvin Ingram, Stephon Gilmore and Antonio Allen, the defense has also been wildly inconsistent.

The Gameocks are going to have to step up their game in conference play if they hope to win the SEC East this year.

They're also going to need a new quarterback.

No. 23 Florida State Seminoles

5 of 6

The talent is certainly there, but I'm sorry Seminoles, you're going to have to beat somebody besides Louisiana-Monroe and Charleston Southern to convince me you're one of the ACC's elite teams.

No. 24 Texas A&M Aggies

6 of 6

Mike Sherman is awful.

I’m not one of those people who likes to trash coaches, but Sherman is just a sideline abomination.

In two weeks he absorbed two second-half collapses.

That’s on you Sherman. You didn’t make the proper halftime adjustments in either game.

Now the Aggies are 2-2 and clinging to a Top 25 ranking.

They don’t even deserve it anyway.

I hope you Have fun in the SEC, hopefully you find a new coach before you dive in with the great whites.
