St. Louis Rams Offense: Keep 'Em or Cut 'Em, Breaking Down Every Position

David HeebOct 4, 2011

The St. Louis Rams are the worst team in football.  Swiss Cheese has less holes than the Rams' O-line.  Their receivers couldn't catch a cold in the winter.  And their secondary?  Don't even get me started...

Obviously, some changes need to be made.

Today, I'm looking at the Rams' offense.  Which of these players do we need to cut?  Which of these players do we need to keep?  That is what I'm going to try to figure out.

Quarterback

1 of 5

Sam Bradford is a stud.  Of course the Rams should keep him.  Backup QB A.J. Feeley is irrelevant.  If Feeley has to go into a game, the Rams are dead anyway.  I do think the team needs to invest in a third quarterback though.

The Rams are only going to go as far as Bradford takes them.  It might be a good idea to keep that guy off of his back.

Keep:  Bradford, Feeley

Cut:  None

Running Back

2 of 5

Steven Jackson is a beast when he's healthy.  The problem is, he is getting up there in years.  Eventually, the Rams are going to have to start looking for a long term replacement.

Cadillac Williams, a free agent pickup, is also banged up and has a history of injuries.  When Williams has been on the field this year, he has been very productive.

Jerious Norwood was another free agent pickup during the offseason.  I was actually excited about Norwood, but he has done absolutely nothing for the Rams, not even on special teams.

Quin Porter is the team's fourth running back and he is just taking up space.  Brit Miller is the team's fullback and is rarely on the field in all the spread formations the Rams are running.

This is a position the Rams need to really upgrade during the offseason.  When are the Rams going to spend a draft pick on a running back?  Did anybody see Roy Helu (Redskins) run all over the Rams this weekend?  That guy was a fourth round pick.

Keep: Jackson, Miller

Cut: Williams, Norwood, Porter

Wide Receivers

3 of 5

Did you know that almost all of our wide receivers are non-drafted free agents?  Undrafted Brandon Gibson was picked up from Philly's practice squad.  Undrafted Danny Amendola was also on Philly's practice squad.  Danario Alexander went undrafted out of Mizzou because of injuries.

What does that say about our draft process?

Alexander is easily the team's most talented receiver but he can't stay healthy.  Amendola is a solid player and would be a great slot guy.  The problem is, the Rams don't have any studs on the outside that can create separation, get open and make plays down the field.

Gibson would be a solid fourth receiver on most teams.  He's not bad, but he is starting for the Rams.  Same for Mike Sims-Walker.  He is being asked to make big plays, but MSW is not a big play receiver.

And don't even get me started on the two rookies.  I know the lockout hurt Austin Pettis and Greg Salas, but come on.  They have to produce more than they are right now.

Keep: Alexander, Amendola

On The Bubble: Curry (special teams), and Gibson, Pettis (only because he is a rookie), Sallis (only because he is a rookie)

Cut: Sims-Walker.

Tight Ends

4 of 5

Lance Kendricks and Illinois Mike have some talent.  They are just underachieving, big time.  I am probably more disappointed with Kendricks than anybody on the roster.  I really thought this guy was going to be a big time player.

I had visions of Antonio Gates in my head.

Instead, he is killing the Rams with crucial drops.  The good news is he can get open. So can Illinois Mike, but unfortunately, he can't stay healthy.

Keep: Kendricks

On The Bubble: Illinois Mike

Cut: Billy Bajema, Steven Spach

Offensive Line

5 of 5

I would argue that the Rams' O-line has underachieved more so far this season than any other position group in the NFL.  Jason Smith, the former No. 2 overall pick in the draft, is an embarrassment to the position.

Roger Saffold had a great rookie year last season but is apparently in a sophomore slump.  The three interior lineman—Jacob Bell (LG), Jason Brown (C) and Harvey Dahl (RG)—were all free agent pickups that cost a lot of money.  But they are also having trouble protecting the passer.

Keep: Saffold and Dahl.

On The Bubble: Bell, Adam Goldberg (backup)

Cut: Brown, and Smith.
