Ben Roethlisberger Injury: Steelers QB's Week 5 Fantasy Football Status

John RozumOct 3, 2011

For Pittsburgh Steelers fans, it's not a good sign. For Ben Roethlisberger's fantasy owners, it's tough to hear.

Right now, Roethlisberger is listed as questionable on the injury report from Oct. 2.

That being said, fans should have no doubt that Big Ben will suit up next Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. Don't believe he's out until the Steelers' offense actually takes the field without him.

Pittsburgh needs him arguably more than ever right now, and although Charlie Batch is one of the best backups in the game, Batch can only do so much compared to Big Ben.

As for his fantasy football status, well, that's a whole different ballgame.

For anyone who has Roethlisberger on their fantasy team and has played him every week this season, they are feeling nothing but frustration.

Sure, he's averaging 287 passing yards per game, which isn't all that bad, but he's only thrown three touchdowns as opposed to four interceptions.

In addition, the Steelers have only averaged 16 points per game this season and haven't scored more than 24 in a game (Seattle, Week 2)

And if you really want to break down the numbers, one of Pittsburgh's touchdowns against the Indianapolis Colts was a defensive score by safety Troy Polamalu.

Therefore, the Steelers offense has only averaged just over 14 points per game.

With wide receivers like Mike Wallace and Hines Ward, Pittsburgh is most definitely underachieving.

Now let's move on to Week 5, where the Steelers host the 3-1 Tennessee Titans, who by the way, upset the Baltimore Ravens 26-13 at home in Week 2.

The Titans have one of the most complete defenses in the NFL though four games, and are ranked in the top 10 in both rush and pass defense.

They're certainly going to be a test for Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh offense, despite being at home, and Ben won't be 100 percent even if he plays.

All this being said, we now have to factor in the biggest weakness of the Steelers—their offensive line.

Not only is the rushing offense lacking (ranked No. 20, averaging 93.8 ypg), but Roethlisberger has been sacked 14 times so far.

If that pace keeps up, and there's a good chance it might, Roethlisberger will go down 56 times in 2011.

Yikes.

So, to be straight forward about Ben Roethlisberger's Week 5 fantasy football status, bench him if you can, because until he and the Steelers' offense prove to be as valuable as their defense, the fantasy points aren't happening.

And unfortunately for Pittsburgh fans, neither will the wins.
