Manchester United FC Transfer Rumours: 5 Players Sir Alex Should Sign

Colin StoneOct 5, 2011

Although Manchester United started this season strongly, Sir Alex's men have suffered recent wobbles against Swiss side Basel and lowly Premier League opponents Norwich.

Many of the chances and goals conceded have come from certain players in the team and Fergie will no doubt be keeping a watchful eye on them.

The wily Scotsman will most definitely have some players on his shortlist, so let's have a look at who those players might be.

Erik Pieters

Holland's talented defender is one to keep a close eye on.

Ever since footballing legend Giovanni Van Bronckhorst retired from international football, 23-year-old Pieters has made the left-back berth his own both for the Oranje and PSV Eindhoven.

With current Red Devils left-back Patrice Evra getting older, could Pieters be the one to replace him?

One thing's for sure—this young full-back is going places.

Edinson Cavani

Ferguson needs a new striker.

With Berbatov and Owen both frozen out of the side and already over the age of 30, the legendary Scottish boss needs to look no further for than Napoli's Edinson Cavani for an exceptionally talented, explosive forward.

The Uruguayan was linked with Manchester City in the summer but, although nothing came of the move, Roberto Mancini is apparently still very keen to bring in the player.

Sir Alex would need to move fast and spend big bucks to bring in this undoubtedly world-class striker.

Keisuke Honda

Park Ji-Sung is another ageing, but skilful, Manchester United player.

The 30-year-old South Korean does not have time on his side and he may well find himself on the way out in the next few months.

Enter CSKA Moscow's Keisuke Honda.

The Japanese international is the country's playmaker who possesses a wicked left foot, an eye for a pass and tremendous dead-ball ability—almost in a similar vein to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Honda would not only be a fantastic piece of business on the field, but his Beckham-esque level of popularity in Japan would also propel Manchester United's Asian fanbase to new heights.

Neven Subotic

This one's a no-brainer.

Although Nemanja Vidic is only 29, the time will come when the influential Serb will leave Old Trafford.

And who better to replace him than with another world-class Serbian in Borussia Dortmund's Neven Subotic?

The 22-year-old rock was at the centre of Dortmund's charge to last season's Bundesliga title and has already been linked with several big sides, including Manchester City.

Sir Alex would need to offer a lot of cash to prize Jurgen Klopp's star defender away from Signal Iduna Park.

Erick Torres

5 of 6

Manchester United already have a precociously talented and goal-hungry Mexican in their squad, so why not make it two?

Sir Alex's side have long been linked with a move for the 18-year-old striker who, incidentally, filled the void left in Guadalajara's side when Javier Hernandez departed nearly 18 months ago.

However, Ferguson is not alone in admiring Torres's fledgling goal-scoring ability and may have a fight on his hands to persuade the youngster to make the move to England.

But it might be the presence of his countryman Hernandez that convinces the striker that a move to Old Trafford would be the right one.

Conclusion

Whether or not Sir Alex Ferguson will pursue these players remains to be seen.

All of them would undoubtedly bring something to the side, but the veteran Scots manager may well be happy enough with his experienced squad and not feel the need to purchase any more personnel.

However, as we've seen in seasons gone by, anything could happen between now and January.
