What Would the Steel Curtain Have Done in a Houston Texans Game?

Honor Warren Wells TheTorchOct 2, 2011

I had so much fun watching Rod Holmes, the son of the late Ernie Holmes, a former Pittsburgh Steeler and member of the famous Steel Curtain, as he walked the corridors of a university and anticipated attending the game between the the Houston Texans and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rod Holmes discussed some of the qualities that the players had when his father was on the team. Some of the guys attended small colleges. They were bonded because of their cultural experiences.

Holmes said, "They were hungry and worked hard to win." It seems that all of the stakes depended on their winning a football game in order to "win" at life.

He even suggested that it is difficult to measure the amount of heart, soul and passion a player has for the game, but he is fairly certain that the generation of players including his father had more to lose, if they loss an NFL game.

Their motivation and inspiration was high.

Well, today, it looks like the group of players on the Houston Texans' team were hungrier for victory than those on the Steelers team. Perhaps those teams who have a outstanding historical record make the mistake of taking their opponents for granted.

Rod Holmes was in the stands at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas, probably cheering for the Steelers. I had the audacity to "tweet" him and to tell him that it looks like the Steelers are having a tough time with the Texans.

Well, the Texans won. I should have been a bit more humble, because the Oakland Raiders were defeated by the New England Patriots on the same day.

The Raiders had a full stadium and they showed their mistake-prone behavior to thousands of fans who came to cheer them to a 3-1 record in Week 4. Now the Raiders' record is 2-2 in Week 4.

I really thought the Pittsburgh Steelers were going to defeat the Houston Texans. I thought the Raiders would manage to defeat the Patriots.

Well, I took a picture of Ernie Holmes' son and we laughed about him wearing the hat which displays his love for the Steelers.

Since both of our teams loss, I guess we will discuss the game with humility since it's too early to say which team is better.

Conclusion

One thing both of us will do is look at the data and to try to come up with a data-driven discussion of why and what happened during those four quarters Sunday. Since Holmes is a gifted mathematician and a serious NFL fan, I assume he will discern a lot more about the game than some people.

Now to answer the question in the article's title: I believe the Steel Curtain would have helped the Steelers defeat the Houston Texans. Let's just say this would have been a "fantasy" decision.
