Womens Football: Glasgow City Win Fifth Consecutive Premier League Title

Marc RosebladeOct 2, 2011

After the tremendous effort on Thursday night in the UEFA Women's Champions League at Petershill Park against Icelandic powerhouses Valur Reykjavic, Glasgow City were back on league duty today knowing a win would secure their fifth Scottish League Title championship in a row.

With three matches remaining of the current league campaign, the 6-1 victory in Edinburgh against the third placed Spartans cemented the recognition that this side is THE Premier women's side in Scotland.

The win also gives the players a massive boost ahead of their Champions League second leg tie in Iceland on Thursday.

Defender Danica Dalziel got the team off to a flyer after only five minutes before Jo Love, who has returned after injury, added the second with an unstoppable low drive into the goal and only minutes later added her own second and the teams third of the half, which may give Eddie Wolecki Black a selection problem for Thursday night in terms of players on form; a good problem but a problem all the same.

The home side grabbed an early second half lifeline after a bizarre series of events that ended with a back pass that rebounded from the post into the crosshairs of Hayley Lauder who scored the easiest goal of her career from only one metre out.

That's twice in a week a back pass has undone the City defence and they will be hoping that there will be no further repeat in the massive match on Thursday.

However, matches are won on goals scored and much like the Liverpool side from the 80's who didn't care how many they conceded because they knew they would score more, Glasgow City were to go on and score more than their hosts.

Christine Murray scored the fourth direct from a freekick before adding her second with an excellently struck shot from the edge of the box that nestled nicely into the top corner of the goal to put her team on easy street.

Lisa Evans was to add the final goal of the day to complement an excellent all round victory and set up a night of celebrations.

Manager Eddie Wolecki Black will have seen this tough match as excellent preparation for the forthcoming match in Iceland and will now start plans for what hopefully be one of the most successful weeks in the club's history.
