College Football Rankings Week 6: Michigan and 4 Most Overrated Teams

Rob GoldbergOct 2, 2011

At this point in the college football season, it is difficult for voters to decide how good a team like Michigan, who has not faced high-level competition, really is.

The new Top 25 is littered with teams who have done nothing but beat a lot of weaker opponents.

While a win is a win, many of these teams will be in for a rude awakening when conference play starts picking up.

Here is a list of the most overrated college football teams at this point of the season, according to their ranking in the latest AP Poll.

Michigan Wolverines

1 of 5

They did just destroy Minnesota 58-0, but it still does not prove that Michigan is for real.

The Gophers are 1-4 and currently 106th in the country in points scored per game, as well as 101st in points against. The fact that Michigan can put a good show against them means only that they did what they were supposed to do.

Michigan jumped seven spots in the AP Poll this week to become No. 12 in the current poll.

They have not beaten a ranked team, and they still have not played a road game. Their next two games are on the road, so they will be tested a little, but the level of competition is not the same as some of those that are ranked below them.

Texas Longhorns

2 of 5

The Texas Longhorns rose six spots in the AP Poll this week after beating Iowa State. Still, they are far from being the 11th best team in the country.

They have a brutal stretch of games coming up, starting with their rivalry game against Oklahoma. The Sooners should knock them down a bit, and then Texas has to face No. 6 Oklahoma State.

While these should be good games, there is very little chance that Texas comes out of these unscathed. Their passing offense is currently 76th in the country, and they will need to get their offense running much smoother if they want to remain this high in the rankings as the season progresses.

Auburn Tigers

3 of 5

The Auburn Tigers jumped from unranked to No. 15 in the AP Poll. While this was partly due to a win over highly-ranked South Carolina, the Tigers were also helped by the ascension of Clemson.

Auburn was originally knocked out of the polls when they lost to an unranked Clemson team. Since that game, Clemson defeated Florida State and Virginia Tech and climbed all the way to No. 8 as of this week.

The returning champs have some impressive wins, but they have also struggled to get through most of them. They needed an amazing comeback to defeat Utah State, who is now 1-3 on the season. Auburn also received an early boost from beating Mississippi State, who has now started 0-3 in the SEC.

Auburn is still a young team and talented team, but they do not deserve to move all the way up to the 15th spot in the rankings.

South Carolina Gamecocks

4 of 5

This was supposed to be a breakout year for Stephen Garcia. A senior who has gained so much knowledge from head coach Steve Spurrier should be able to have a great season with a good team around him.

Unfortunately for South Carolina, Garcia has not stepped up this season. He has thrown nine interceptions to only four touchdowns and has his lowest completion percentage of his career.

While the Gamecocks are currently 4-1, they have looked shaky on each side of the football. Their loss to Auburn showed some of their weaknesses, and they will not be able to keep up their good record as the season progresses.

They will soon drop from No. 18 to unranked.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

5 of 5

Saturday night's game against Wisconsin showed that Nebraska was not ready for conference play.

While Wisconsin is one of the best teams in the country playing at home, Nebraska was thoroughly dominated. Their star Taylor Martinez threw three big interceptions, and he gave his team no chance to win.

The Cornhuskers did drop six spots in the latest rankings to No. 14, but it was probably not enough of a fall.

Nebraska has not done anything yet to prove it is worthy of a high ranking. They struggled versus Fresno State and Washington, and even Wyoming gave them fits until the end.

The Huskers will need to work to prove they have enough talent to compete in the new Big Ten.
