EPL: Most Popular Replica Shirts by Player Name

Davey EdmondsonOct 2, 2011

Years ago any football fan attending a football match would wear a woolly hat, badges, rosette or a scarf with their club's colors or name on it. These were the main ways fans would wear the colors of their team.

It has only been the last few decades where replica jerseys have become de rigueur at football grounds. In the mid-1990s teams and kit manufacturers started to design their jerseys with the fan in mind instead of the players.

Replica jerseys are now a lucrative market for clubs, worth roughly £200 million a year to Premier League clubs. For a slightly higher price than a standard jersey, fans can pay extra to customize their jersey with a player's name or their own name.

Here is the list of best-selling player jerseys from 10th to first, based on overall sales. Figures are correct for the 2010-11 season.

10: Ryan Giggs

1 of 10

Despite recently courting controversy for his off the pitch antics, the record breaking Manchester United midfielder is the 10th most popular jersey amongst fans.

Giggs has the most league titles of any EPL player, and is the only current EPL player to have ever been mentioned on The Simpsons.

9: Andrei Arshavin

2 of 10

Maybe a surprise inclusion in the top 10, the Arsenal player is still very popular amongst fans in the UK and Russia. He is the ninth most popular overall.

Arshavin signed for the Gunners in January 2009, and was voted Arsenal's player of the month for March and April of that year.

8: Luis Suarez

3 of 10

Despite only signing for Liverpool in January, Suarez is already the eighth most popular player in the EPL due to his dazzling performances since joining the Anfield squad.

Suarez was named the Dutch player of the season 2009-10 for his performances for Ajax, and player of the tournament at this year's Copa America.

Just ahead of his Chelsea teammate, Lampard signed for Chelsea in 2001 and is very popular with Chelsea fans due to his many goals for the team.

Lampard's uncle is Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp. He also has a very high IQ, earning an A* grade in Latin whilst at school.

5: Robin Van Persie

6 of 10

Promoted to captain since the departure of Cesc Fabregas, Van Persie is the most popular Arsenal player in the EPL, signing with the Gunners in May 2004.

Van Persie was Arsenal's top scorer in 2006-07, 2008-09 and 2010-11, and recently scored his 100th goal for the club.

4: Chicharito

7 of 10

Chicharito AKA Javier Hernandez is the highest-placed newcomer on the list, due to his many goal scoring performances for Manchester United since signing before the start of last season.

Chicharito means "little pea" in Spanish. He is called this because his father Javier Hernandez Gutierrez, who also played for Mexico, was called "Chicharo" which is "pea" in English.

3: Steven Gerrard

8 of 10

One of Liverpool's key players, Gerrard has only ever played for the Anfield side. Despite never winning the league, Gerrard has numerous accolades including two FA Cups and a Champions League trophy to his name.

As well as being Liverpool's captain, Gerrard also captained England at the 2010 World Cup. French legend Zinedine Zidane considers Gerrard to be one of the greatest players of all time.

2: Fernando Torres

9 of 10

Despite his indifferent form for Chelsea, Torres still remains one of the most popular players in the EPL. He was previously the top selling jersey last season.

His performances for the Spanish national team have earned him a European Championship and a World Cup, he also remains one of Spain's most popular players.

1: Wayne Rooney

10 of 10

It was less than a year ago that Rooney threatened to leave Manchester United, but he somehow ended up staying. He remains the most popular player in the EPL.

Rooney has a tattoo of the words "just enough education to perform," the name of an album by his favorite band Stereophonics.

So there you go, there's your top 10. It says a lot that it's mostly goal scorers that are top 10, the fans clearly value that over defenders!
