College Football Rankings Week 6: 5 Teams That Can Make Legit Claim for No. 1

Matt ShetlerOct 2, 2011

Heading into Week 6 of the college football season, we still don't have a unanimous No. 1 team in the nation.

Both LSU and Oklahoma top their respective polls, but there are plenty of other teams that can make a claim that they are the best team in the land. Some have a few quality wins in their pocket already to back up those claims.

Here's a look at five of them.

LSU

1 of 5

It's an easy claim to make for the Tigers, who currently sit atop of the AP Poll.

The quality of wins early on in the season make them a no-brainer selection. Three of their five wins have come against teams that were ranked at the time, including Oregon, Mississippi State and West Virginia.

Oklahoma

2 of 5

Oklahoma is another easy choice since they top the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Sooners started the season as the No. 1 ranked team and have done nothing so far to have them not included in the conversation.

They even hold a big win over Florida State on the road in their pocket.

Alabama

3 of 5

Alabama could possibly be the best team of the top three, so they are included in this conversation.

The Crimson Tide began the season ranked No. 2 and have wins over Penn State and Florida on the road and a home win against Arkansas.

No conversation about the best team in college football should take place without including the Crimson Tide.

Clemson

4 of 5

I'm not drinking Dabo Swinney's Kool-Aid just yet, but looking at the current top 10, no team can boast three wins against ranked teams, especially not all of them in a row.

This Clemson team is very good and three consecutive wins against Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech should speak for themselves.

Wisconsin

5 of 5

I considered a bunch of teams here, but I'm going with the Badgers because they are the most impressive all-around looking team left.

Passing the eye test is one thing, but you have to beat good teams and Wisconsin easily handled Nebraska last night.

This spot likely could have gone to Oklahoma State had Texas A&M held on against Arkansas. The Aggies' losing two straight leads diminishes Oklahoma State's win just slightly.
