College Football Rankings Week 6: 5 Teams Ranked Too High in the Top 25
The latest USA Today Coaches Poll and Associated Press college football rankings were released on Sunday afternoon, and, as always the case, there are teams one might say are too high and some that are too low.
And we know, for the most part, the voters in each do a very good job. So, the majority of those ranked are just about right.
For the sake of this argument, we will be using the USA Today poll.
No. 1 Oklahoma
1 of 5This is absolute nitpicking because it is tough to dispute Oklahoma being ranked anywhere but in the top-3.
However, the thought here is that Southeastern Conference powerhouses Alabama and Louisiana State are just a little bit better than the Sooners.
No. 4 Stanford
2 of 5Nothing against Stanford, which is no doubt a quality football team. But is it really fair that the Cardinal, which has yet to face anyone within a football field of the top-25, is ranked ahead of teams with those type of quality wins?
It could be suggested No. 5 Wisconsin (which has beaten Nebraska), No. 6 Boise State (Georgia), No. 7 Oklahoma State (Texas A&M) and No. 8 Clemson (Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech) should be ranked ahead of Stanford.
No. 10 Texas
3 of 5Let's see, the Longhorns finished the 2010 season with a losing record and, while unbeaten so far in 2011, can call their best wins BYU and UCLA...Texas belongs in the polls, but at No. 10?
No. 16 Illinois
4 of 5The Illini do have a pair of quality wins this season in Arizona State and Northwestern, but are we really to believe this is the 16th-best team in the country?
Illinois should improve to 6-0 with a victory against Indiana next week, but then Ohio State comes calling.
No. 20 Michigan State
5 of 5The Spartans are 4-1 and did win, 10-7, at Ohio State on Saturday. But one thing about MSU's season is extremely troubling so far: Notre Dame 31, Michigan State 13.
