College Football Rankings: Re-Ranking the Top 10 After Week 5

T.J. McaloonOct 2, 2011

The College Football season is only five weeks old, and we have two teams at No. 1 in two polls, two teams ranked differently in four through six, and two polls that will cause confusion when the new polls are released later today.

This poll is a combination of both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls.

Gone from the Top 10 polls are the following: South Carolina, Nebraska and Virginia Tech.

Browse through these slides to see who makes their first appearance in the Top 10 this week and who's in the Top 3.

10. Texas Longhorns

1 of 10

Last Week Rankings:

AP- 17

USA Today: 17

This week the Longhorns will crack the Top-10. They had a dominating performance on the road against an undefeated Iowa State team, winning 34-14. They'll be in the Top 10 because every team that was ahead of them—minus Clemson—lost.

It's surprising how far these Texas Longhorns have climbed this year.

9. Oregon Ducks

2 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP:

USA Today: 11

The Ducks picked a bad time to have a bye week. This week they sat at home on the bye before getting ready to start up their Pac 12 schedule. They have Cal next week, and a big performance against the Bears will shoot these Ducks back up the polls.

8. Clemson Tigers

3 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP: 13

USA Today: 15

The hottest team in College Football today is the Clemson Tigers. Three straight weeks, three straight wins against teams that were ranked. The Auburn win was against the Defending National Champions. The win against Florida State was against a team that was ranked fifth the week before. And their win yesterday against Virginia Tech was against a the team picked to win the ACC.

This Clemson team is taking all new comers to their band wagon.

They could be this year's Auburn Tigers. The team that comes out of nowhere to win the National Championship.

7. Oklahoma State Cowboys

4 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP: 5

USA Today: 6

This team, much like Oregon, had a bye week at the wrong time. Having the week off as other teams had big wins around them hurt the Cowboys. There is still a lot of time for Oklahoma State to climb back up these polls.

In addition, the loss to Texas A&M does not help. Another week had Texas A&M take a big halftime lead only to lose it in the second half.

6. Stanford Cardinals

5 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP: 6

USA Today: 4

The Stanford Cardinals had an impressive victory over the UCLA Bruins at home last night. It was even more impressive for the people who had money on the game. Up 38-19 with 1:45 remaining, the Cardinals could have just knelt with the ball and taken the victory.

Instead, Andrew Luck threw for his fifth touchdown pass, launching the score to 45-19 and a cover of their -21.5 points that they were giving.

Hooo ray for covers!

5. Boise State Broncos

6 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP: 4

USA Today: 5

The problem with Boise is that last year, when it played Nevada it was against a ranked team. This year, it was a Nevada team at 1-2 coming in.

Looking at the rest of Boise's schedule, it has no games against ranked teams.

If Boise State wants to make it to the National Title game, it will need some losses by the top teams.

4. Wisconsin Badgers

7 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP: 7

USA Today: 7

The Wisconsin Badgers had the biggest week in college football. They had ESPN College Gameday on campus for their game against Nebraska. They had the eyes of the Big Ten on them wanting to see how they would welcome Nebraska to the Big Ten.

Well, they welcomed them with a 48-17 beat down.

With Alabama and LSU playing each other soon and Oklahoma having to play its Big 12 schedule, it sets the Badgers up very nicely to sneak into one of the top spots in the rankings.

3. Oklahoma Sooners

8 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP: 2

USA Today: 1

When can you win but also lose? When you have non-conference opponents at home like Ball State. Last night, other teams were playing their conference schedule while OU was picking apart Ball State 62-6.

This doesn't affect Oklahoma's chances at the National Championship. LSU and Alabama will knock one of the other off soon thus putting OU back in the title picture.

But for one week, the Sooners will be out of the top two spots.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide

9 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP:

USA Today: 2

Alabama took care of business this week in Gainesville. It took a good shot from the Gators in the first quarter, going down 10-3. Then Alabama took over starting in the second, cruising to a 38-10 victory over then-undefeated and No. 12-ranked Florida.

Next week, Alabama has Vanderbilt.

1. LSU Tigers

10 of 10

Last Week's Rankings:

AP:

USA Today: 2

The LSU Tigers are the best team in College Football, and they're only getting better. Original starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson came back to the team after a suspension to start the season.

Their win against Kentucky last week wasn't earth shattering, but it was a 35-7 take-care-of-business win against an SEC team.

Next week, it's LSU's turn against Florida.
