Washington Football: 3 Things Learned From Win Over Utes

Alex ShoemakerOct 1, 2011

Today, the Huskies improved their record to 4-1 (2-0) after a 31-7 win over the Utah Utes.

The Huskies proved a lot of things in the win, but every answer seemed to spark more questions.

Washington won its first road game of the season after losing their only other in Week 3 against Nebraska.

The Huskies still hold their place, tied for first in the Pac-12 North, and should jump into college football’s Top 25 after this win.

Depth at Running Back Could Be an Issue

1 of 3

Say what you want about Chris Polk being one of the best running backs in the Pac-12 and the entire country, but it doesn’t matter if he goes down.

Against the Utes, Polk again had a monster day, rushing for 189 yards on 26 carries. Three other Huskies rushed for negative yardage (including quarterback Keith Price).

The next leading rusher for the Huskies was freshman Bishop Sankey, who only rushed for five yards on just four carries.

The Huskies Secondary Is Hit or Miss

2 of 3

The Huskies have the worst secondary in the Pac-12, and one of the worst in the entire FBS. Averaging an allowed 327.5 yards per game through the air, Washington ranks 117th in the country in that category.

Even with injuring starting quarterback Jordan Wynn, the Huskies secondary still allowed the Utes to pass for over 300 yards.

The good news for the Huskies is that both Sean Parker and Greg Ducre recorded interceptions on the day.

The Huskies defense gets beat deep a lot, but they have the skill and capability of forcing turnovers.

Stanford and Oregon…Beware of the Huskies

3 of 3

The Huskies really looked impressive against the Utes. Coming into the game as double-digit underdogs, the Dawgs took control of the game early and never looked back.

The 31-14 score doesn’t give a true picture of the domination Washington’s offense and defense had all game. On offense, Keith Price and Chris Polk looked outstanding. On defense, the Huskies held the Utes to just 17 yards rushing and forced two interceptions.

The Huskies should have an easy win over the Colorado Buffaloes this week, enough time to prepare for a huge game against the Stanford Cardinal a week later.

This team can compete for the Pac-12 championship this year.
