Heisman Trophy Update: How Each of the Favorites Did in Week 5

Chris HumphreyOct 1, 2011

With some of the best matchups of the season, Week 5 was poised to be a major force in the Heisman conversation going forward.

Alabama vs Florida, Nebraska-Wisconsin, Texas A&M-Arkansas and Auburn-South Carolina were some of the games most of the country had it's eye on. They were also the prime showcases for a few of the top Heisman candidates.

Some of these guys took care of business — Wisconsin's Russell Wilson or Arkansas' Tyler Wilson. Others fumbled away their chances at the worst time — South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore.

Let's take a look at all of the top Heisman candidates' Week 5 performances.

Landry Jones, Oklahoma

1 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 23-33 Attempts, 425 yards passing, Five touchdowns, Interception

Heisman Stock: Up

While Ball State wasn't the toughest competition for Landry Jones and Oklahoma this Saturday, the junior quarterback was nearly just padding his stats against the Cardinals tonight in Norman as the showdown with Texas looms next week in Dallas.

Kellen Moore, Boise State

2 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 19-33 Attempts, 142 yards, Two Touchdowns, Two Interceptions

Heisman Stock: Down

Even though the Broncos were able to avenge their 2010 loss to Nevada that kept them out of the BCS, Kellen Moore didn't have a Heisman type game with two interceptions and only 142 yards through the air against a Nevada team that could have been easily blown out by Boise State.

Denard Robinson, Michigan

3 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 15-19 Attempts, 169 Yards Passing, 51 Yards Rushing, Three Total Touchdowns

Heisman Stock: Up

With an expected rout of their Big Ten rival Minnesota to a tune of 58-0, Denard Robinson has definitely improved his Heisman chances with three more touchdowns to add to his growing touchdown total that has already reached 14 in the first five games of 2011.

Tyler Wilson, Arkansas

4 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 30-51 Attempts, 510 Yards Passing, Three Touchdowns

Heisman Stock: Up

Wilson was a name a lot of people were mentioning before the season started, but a subpar performance against Alabama in Week 4 seemed to kill any Heisman potential. Then he pulled off a miracle against Texas A&M, bringing Arkansas back from a 35-17 halftime deficit to win 42-38. Wilson played so well down the stretch its impossible to keep his name off this list.

Robert Griffin III, Baylor

5 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 23-31 Attempts, 346 yards, Five Touchdowns, Interception

Heisman Stock: Up

Even though Baylor got bit by the upset bug today by Kansas State, Robert Griffin III has continued to gain ground in the Heisman race this season as he threw for five more touchdowns today against the Wildcats with the total so far this season rests at 18 with only one interception.

Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina

6 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 17 Carries, 66 yards, Touchdown

Heisman Stock: Down

After a strong first four games in 2011, sophomore Marcus Lattimore had a bit of a letdown game Saturday against the defending National Champion Auburn Tigers as the running back only gained 66 on the ground when he rushed for 611 yards and eight touchdowns in September.

Tren Richardson, Alabama

7 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 29 Carries, 181 yards, Two Touchdowns

Heisman Stock: Up

As the Crimson Tide showed they are a serious SEC and National title contender after their 38-10 win at Florida, Trent Richardson also showed that he is in the race for the Heisman after a monster game with 181 yards on the ground and two touchdowns as he looks to climbing up the Heisman Watch.

Russell Wilson, Wisconsin

8 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 14-20 attempts, 255 Yards Passing, Three Total Touchdowns

Heisman Stock: Up

If Wilson wasn't on center stage of the Heisman conversation before Wisconsin's game against Nebraska, he certainly is now. The Badgers are clearly the team to beat in the Big Ten and the 48-17 victory over the Cornhuskers was arguably the most impressive win of any team this season. Wilson is the motor that makes this engine run and Heisman voters are taking serious notice.

Andrew Luck, Stanford

9 of 9

Saturday's Stats: 23-27 Attempts, 227 yards, Three touchdowns

Heisman Stock: Up

Luck once again proved why scouts are so high on him for the next level. He took care of UCLA like a surgeon, completing 85.2 percent of his passes in the Cardinal's 45-19 victory. At 4-0 Stanford is one of the best teams in the nation, but it hasn't been challenged yet and until Luck proves he can rip off these types of numbers against top competition he won't be at the head of the Heisman table.
