LSU Football: 3 Reasons Why the Tigers Are Better off Without Jordan Jefferson

Sean MerrimanOct 1, 2011

LSU made the decision this week to reinstate former starting QB Jordan Jefferson, who was suspended after his involvement in an offseason bar fight.

Head coach Les Miles made the announcement that Jarrett Lee will retain the starting quarterback job. However, he wants Jefferson to contribute to the offense, which could stir up some controversy in Baton Rouge.

The Tigers' have gotten off to a great 4-0 start this level and appear to be rolling on all cylinders with Lee behind center. So what kind of impact will Jefferson have to the team?

Let's take a look at three reasons why the Tigers are better off without Jordan Jefferson.

1. Jarrett Lee Is Better

1 of 3

Heading into this year's college football season, many expected Jordan Jefferson to be the Tigers' starting quarterback. But after getting suspended, senior Jarrett Lee took over the job and he has been brilliant from that point on.

Lee has helped lead the Tigers to a 4-0 record, three wins of which came against ranked opponents. He has done a great job at managing games and cutting down on turnovers, which is what essentially led to him losing his job to Jefferson in the past.

Until Jarrett Lee has a real letdown, which I can't see happening, there is no reason to even consider Jefferson as a starting option. Not for a game, not even for a series.

2. Negative Media Attention

2 of 3

With the No.1 ranking in college football, comes plenty of national media attention.

But keep in mind, that is good media attention. The attention they might get after reinstating a guy who was convicted of kicking someone in the head at a bar fight and seriously injuring them...that is not good media attention.

The LSU program is obviously going to be in the national spotlight, regardless of its ranking. But this is not the type of attention that a team needs when they are potentially on their way to a National Championship season.

3. Chemistry

3 of 3

If you are Les Miles and your team is currently ranked No.1 in the country with three impressive wins this season, why in the world would you mess with the chemistry of your team?

If the Tigers' were weak at quarterback and Jarrett Lee was struggling, then maybe it would make sense. But Lee has been sensational, and Jordan Jefferson certainly hasn't stood out above the rest with his play over the past two seasons.

This team seems to rally around Lee, which makes this move puzzling to myself, and many others I'm sure.

If you have something great, why mess with it?
